Warning: Mac Update 10.5.6 Breaks PwnageTool For iPhone, iPod Touch [Confirmed] -    #1

Mac users with a hacked iPhone or iPod touch should beware—The update Apple released today (10.5.6 for Mac OS X Leopard) has been found to keep your Mac from recognizing your iPhone in DFU mode, making it impossible to jailbreak and/or unlock it using PwnageTool or QuickPwn.

If you intend to jailbreak or unlock your iPhone or iPod touch, we suggest waiting on the update until the Dev Team comes up with a solution. The Dev Team has been informed of the issue and we'll keep you updated as more information is available.

Simply plugging in your iPhone via a USB hub is reported to work, as it does with the new MacBooks.

Update: Erica Sadun at Ars Technica has confirmed that the USB kernel extensions (drivers) included in the 10.5.6 update do block DFU mode, which is required for PwnageTool and QuickPwn to work.

The dev team just came out with these suggestions for a fix:

1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.

3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!

The post is confusing, at one point it says users with hacked phones should beware but then goes on to describe how the 10.5.6 upgrade makes it impossible to jailbreak/unlock the phone.

Is there a danger or risk of the upgrade for those whose phones are already jailbroken? If so, what is it?

There is always risk and danger when hacking the iPhone. The Dev Team generally gives a warning then shows you how to do something.

Not all iPhone owners are at the same skill level, so of course you could fat finger your way through the terminal or some program and screw something up whereas someone else would be perfectly fine following the same directions.

This is why I run my website, to help explain these things in a much easier to follow fashion.

I may update my tutorials to include the 10.5.6 work around when I have time to mess with it this weekend. When the unlock is released I'll of course make a tutorial for using yellsn0w.

Can anyone elaborate on this?

Big ups, thanks, and appreciation in advance of any help!
