Rip Dev has released a new version of his Installer.app 4 beta for jailbroken iPhones. The update adds several features we heard about like a package rating system, as well as support for proxies, improved error reporting, and a fixed app icon badge. More details after the break.

• Added user-driven ratings. We encourage you to submit your votes for various packages. Once more data will be collected (in a few days), that will be reflected on the Featured page.


• SpringBoard is no longer terminated after the software was installed or removed.


• Proxies are (again) supported. The support was broken after we moved to libcurl.


• Introduced download timeouts (again) that were disabled after the move to libcurl.


• Reworked many parts of the engine in an effort to get rid of the occasional GUI stalls.


• If a particular source fails to update, it will be moved to "disabled" state for 6 hours and will not be included in the all sources refresh process. The disabled state is listed as the source icon with a red "stop" sign over it. This is done to prevent unnecessary stalls at the sources refresh if one of the sources goes offline for whatever reason. If you'd like to retry it before 12 hour interval, open its info and hit Refresh button there.


• Removed customInfo support as it was mostly used for unnecessary ads that were disturbing many people. These pages are normally reachable from the "More Info" link.


• Much better error reporting. Forget these "error 3"s and such. The descriptions are much more human readable now. And for script errors, it will show an actual script command that caused an error.


• Installer will prevent iPhone/iPod touch from sleeping when it's downloading or installing something.


• The app icon badge should behave better now.


• Lots of smaller fixes and optimizations I won't list.

The new version is available as an update in Installer.app.

I just updated Installer--not sure why, I never use it--now my iPhone is in a vicious re-boot cycle circle. I can't get it to fully re-boot. It keeps vibrating every minute or so with the apple/pineapple logo displaying. After a few cycled of this, it inevitably does a restart by itself and start the cyle all over again. I tried a hard reboot with no success. Any ideas?

Sounds like your iPhone is booting up fine but SpringBoard is crashing. Try SSH-ing into your phone and renaming com.apple.SpringBoard.plist.

Mine is doing the exact same thing. How do you go about SSHing into the phone if you dont know the IP address. Do you just start guessing? Start at like 10.0.1.2 and so on... If I leave it plugged in when I turn it on it will open up my iphoto like it is wanting to import pics but the apple logo is still on the screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have had this problem before. when Installing packages from the previous version of installer app. If you do not want to ssh in to your iphone or don't know how, Or want to avoid doing a full restore try this. It has always worked for me.

Plug iphone into Mac, open itunes and wait. I know this does not sound very proactive. But after several automatic reboots and the apple logo just sitting there on the screen I found eventually if you interact with Itunes you get the spinning rainbow wheel. (Can take over 10 mins). Then wait for itunes to recognize your phone. Again wait. another 10 mins . Eventually my springboard restarts and my iphone works again.

F.Y.I. This is my experience using a iphone 3g, on at and t. (2.1 Jail-broken)

Let me know if this works for anyone else. Jimmy

Okay, I just ran the above described process. on my newly bricked iphone, and confirm it will recover the springboard after the latest version of installer app causes the iphone to go in to a constant crashing loop.

Installer app now works fine for me.

So far I get the message iTunes could not connect due to unkown error 0XE8000024. iTunes recognized my phone once, briefly--but, quickly thereafter stopped.
