Apple Exceeds 10 Million iPhones Sold, Outsells RIM, 200 Million Apps Sold -    #1

During Apple's 4th quarter financial results conference call, Apple announced that they have exceeded their goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008. Apple sold 6.9 million iPhone 3Gs this quarter, which exceeds the total number of original iPhones sold (6.1mil) throughout its lifetime. If the iPhone's revenue wasn't deferred, it would have represented $4.6 billion, or 39% of Apple's total revenue in the September quarter.

Since the launch of the iPhone 3G, Apple has increased the number of distribution points for the iPhone to 3,100 in the US, thanks in part to Best Buy. Additionally, the iPhone 3G is now available in over 30,000 locations worldwide.

Steve Jobs made a special appearance to announce that Apple had beaten RIM in the 4th quarter by selling 6.9 million iPhone 3Gs, compared to RIM's 6.1 million handsets sold. Additionally, Apple is now the 3rd largest mobile phone supplier in the world as measured in revenues after Nokia and Samsung.

Steve also announced that Apple anticipates the 200,000,000th application will be sold tomorrow, just 102 days after the App Store was launched. There are now over 5,500 applications in the App Store to date, and the rate of submissions is increasing each week. With its exceptional success, Apple now believes that the App Store will generate even more iPhone sales in the future.

SJ mentioned the netbooks category today. While not really a nascent category (I remember a Sony laptop that was tiny, 10 years ago), the iPhone is, of course a great fit for many of us, but make it twice the size and it will become a laptop replacement for many people, and eat up Apple's laptop profits. My parents would run out and buy two of them, I'd run out and buy one for my wife. I know the lack of a real keyboard would keep some people buying laptops, but it wouldn't bother many people.

I think it's more likely to merge the multi-touch technology into a laptop, just to keep the price up there.
