2.0.1 Update Changes iPhone 3G Baseband, May Break Future Unlocks -    #1

Well, the 2.0.1 firmware update has been released, and users are reporting problems. Not too surprisingly, first-gen iPhones that have been jailbroken and/or unlocked are un-jailbroken by the update, so you'll lose access to all of your unofficial, third party apps. The Dev Team is already hard at work on an updated Pwnage tool for 2.0.1. However, the update is a little more serious for iPhone 3G owners.

Not only does the update un-jailbreak iPhone 3G's, but it also update's the baseband. On one hand, it could increase it's stability and improve things like keypad responsiveness, but it could also break any unlock or jailbreak that the Dev Team might be working on for the 3G, decreasing the likelihood of being able to unlock your 3G in the future once the unlock is released.

So, should you update or not?

The Dev Team announced on their blog that the update should not pose a serious problem for iPhone 2G users, but you will temporarily lose access to jailbreak apps and it will be re-locked until the Dev Team gets out a new Pwnage Tool. iPhone 3G owners should only update if they never plan to unlock their iPhone, as they can't guarantee that they can create an unlock for it. They will have their own software update available in the next Pwnage Tool that will make the baseband update optional.

Lets clear that up a little:

The Dev Team announced on their blog that the update should not pose a serious problem for iPhone 2G users, but you will temporarily lose access to jailbreak apps until they update the Pwnage Tool. iPhone 3G owners should only update if they never plan to unlock their iPhone, as they can't guarantee that they can create an unlock for it. They will have their own software update available in the next Pwnage Tool that will make unlocking THE 2G iPHONE possible.

Like you said, pwnage tool does not work with 2.0.1 yet. Soon they will update and 2G users will be good, but an unlock for 3G is still not guaranteed.

the phone is a brick -    #3
I have never done any kinda of modifying to my phone but once i update it, it bricked. It says it doesn't have a ICCID and the only thing is that it is a 2G and I had stopped paying for the service and it just became an iPod.

Well, the 2.0.1 upgrade bricked my phone. Luckily I had a recent backup and the iTunes "Restore to Factory Settings" worked.

Don't forget to do a backup first!

My upgrade didn't go smooth either. I am using Windows. That version of iTunes has a "Restore" button on the summary tab. That worked for me but I lost some settings and also my bluetooth links.

Good luck

From the Dev Team blog:
"As soon as testing is finished a PwnageTool update will be released that will allow you to safely update either device with all current PwnageTool features still in place and you’ll have the option to disable the baseband update."

The update will make unlocking the 2G possible, as well as keep the possibility of a 3G unlock that existed before the baseband update.

2.0.1 Update -    #11
I have a 2G iPhone, did the update and lost all my apps, etc... I used Pawnage tool to install Pawnage again without a hitch on the second attempt. I had to tell it that the iphone had never been pawned when it asked that question. The first time I said yes and it hung up and I had to restore to 2.0.1. I tried it again and said no to having been pawned, then it allowed me to go into DFU mode and pick my altered IPSW file to restore. Now I'm back as I was before the 2.0.1 upgrade.

professional sounding, but useless post -    #13
This post is well written and could have been helpful. But it leaves out critical details such as what specific version of pwnage they are referring to. So it was a great post for a day or two then it becomes confusing or inaccurate as new versions are released.
