Apple Seeds 2.1 Software, SDK Update To Developers - July 24th, 2008, 09:47 PM #1 |
![]() Even before the iPhone 2.0 software was released to the masses, rumors were circulating that 2.0.1 was already in the works. It looks like they have a little more in store than just a routine update, as they have seeded a beta version of iPhone 2.1 Firmware (Beta 1, Build 5F90) to developers. GearLive reports that in addition to all of the background update goodies you would expect, Apple has also added new Core Location features that track the location and speed the device is traveling, which could possibly make the highly anticipated turn-by-turn GPS directions a reality. They have also included early Push Notifications APIs that will allow applications to process notifications in the background, a feature they promised for September. Apple also seeded a new version of the SDK. Oddly, this version cannot be used to submit apps to the App Store. [via GearLive]

That's not odd. It uses new and changed APIs that aren't available in 2.0. If you develop for 2.1, it can't run on 2.0. However, I just updated to 2.1 and tested that it does run 2.0 apps.
Darn! Just my developed app runs. No apps I got from the app store. Last edited by bruss147; July 24th, 2008 at 10:25 PM. |

So these would possibly be Apple created turn by turn applications? Kind of makes me wonder what that TomTom rep was saying when he claimed they were working on turn by turn for the iPhone. Time will tell.

I think we might see ver 2.0.1 released sometime soon then 2.1 will follow after the more than likely September iPod Event if Apple follows the same trend as last year of course

Yeah, I don't think we'll see 2.1 until around September since it has that notification service added in and that doesn't come out until September. I also bet a 2.0.1 comes out to fix some issues before then. Some of the iPod problems I've been having with 2.0 seem to have gone away on 2.1.
