Apple Announces The iPhone 3G - Has 3G & GPS, Costs $199, Coming July 11th -    #1

During Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, Steve Jobs announce the 'iPhone 3G', the next version of the iPhone. This new version of the iPhone has a new look with beveled edges, flush headset jack, and all metal buttons. It also features, as we thought, 3G and GPS support. It also sports the same gorgeous display, and improved audio. The iPhone 3G will also be available in 22 countries at launch and 70 countries at the year's end (Apple's goal was 25).

The iPhone 3G also gets much better battery life and talk time on 3G than other 3G phones such as the Nokia n95.

The new iPhone will also cost $199 for the 8GB version and $299 for the 16GB version. It also comes in a white model.

This is a truly disappointing keynote and (yet another) missed opportunity for Apple. With all of the rumors for the past months, I expected that Apple would've stayed ahead of the curve. Instead everything unveiled was just old news. There were no surprise elements. My comments:

1) Background Processes: their centralized-server "solution" is just a cover-up for the fact that they are still trying to impede VoIP on the iPhone. Background processes are already possible on the iPhone (e.g. Fring).
2) App Store: nothing new here, same old, same old. Except that a bunch of people developed a bunch of more apps.
3) Pricing: lowering prices is an inconsistent strategy at this point (given the feature set and market demand). All they are trying to do is beat the short-term sales forecast. In the medium-term they risk commoditizing the product (as happened with the Motorola Razr) and cannibalizing the other iPod products, since the new pricing structure is completely misaligned.

Judging from the rumor mill, it looks like the people behind the rumors worked harder than Apple. Too bad that none of these people work at Apple. That could've brought some more interesting, unexpected and ground-breaking upgrades. So now it's back to speculating until the next time...

What a crock of SH*T -    #6
This Keynote was lame, lame, lame. A lot of blah blah blah. No "one more thing." No touchscreen iMac. We already have apps via Installer. So what's the big news? You get to have the "convenience" of paying for your previously free apps. BOOM!!!! 3G is good - as is GPS, but what about video chat? The Japanese are sooo ahead of us on video phone chat.

The new iphone looks okay - but it's no major retooling. Why the delay on the rollout? It all seems pretty straightforward to me. They are out of stock on old iphones. Why not sell now? Screw camping out. I'm ordering on line. . . . IF I order at all.

There is some truth to your point but also consider that they have a massive new revenue stream opening up with the iPhone store. They're going to make a lot of money off of those apps.

Copy & Paste -    #12
Still no copy and paste?!!! No 5mp camera?!!! No video camera? On pricing, Apple is missing the point. If everyone can afford the iPhone, a lot of people will steer away from it. Look at what happened to the Motorazr! To many people, the attraction is the status! You can take that to the bank!

A lot missing though -    #13
No copy and paste, no 5mp camera, screen still does not rotate on apps other than safari and calc, no video camera, no global search - even just for calendar. All in all, I think it fell short!

5mp camera?? -    #14
what the hell do you need a 5mp camera for in a phone? all you'll get out of that is a big file with the same bad quality. you realize image quality has nothing to do with megapixels, right? the sensor size is what determines image quality, larger sensor = lager photosites = less noise = better quality. small sensor + more MP = smaller photosites = bad quality. The image sensor in most camera phones is like 3mm x 3.5mm...you'll NEVER get any DSLR quality images out of something like that.

I can't believe all these people bought into the rumors so much that they expected apple to follow along.

haters hating -    #17
The only people really upset about this:

Those who have other wonderful phones that do everything, therefore don't need it anyway.
Those who have an iphone and feel like they have to upgrade but it isn't worth the extra money
and Those who have been waiting and waiting and still want more.

Could there have been more? Definitely. I'd love some more features, but I'm so excited for this because I bought a refurb 8gb iphone for $250, sold it for $430, and can buy a new 16gb iphone for $299. Neato.

I just hope the back doesn't scratch. And I wish they were still shipping it with dock.. oh well.

Too bad I have to wait until July, I'm in serious iphone withdrawal!
