iPhone without Data Plan? -    #1
Some of us feel that $59.99 a month is a bit to much, but how does $39.99 sound? A blog entry on Kludgeless.com states that if you call and complain about slow EDGE speeds they may offer to cancel the unlimited Data plan. They did in his case, leaving him with 450 minutes for $39.99 per month. The only problem is that you can no longer enjoy visual voicemail. Pressing the voicemail button instead calls your voicemail. SMS text messages wont work either, but you can still go online via Wi-Fi, using iPhone as an internet communications device.

Kludgeless has offered step by step instructions for anyone interested in doing this:

Call customer service at 1-800-331-0500 to cancel your service.
Enter your mobile phone number.
Press 0 for other issues.
Press 5 to close an account.
Tell the customer service representative that you want to cancel your service because the Edge network is too slow.
If they don’t offer to remove the internet service, ask them to remove it and make sure they tell you what your bill and features will be like without it.
Enjoy paying 33% less per month for your plan!

For me, EDGE isn't unbearably slow and I find it quite convenient to be online almost anywhere I go. Of course everyone is different and this may be exactly what you've been looking for. If you do decide to cancel your data plan, let us know!

Has anyone had recent success with this process or heard if the data plan on the iPhone 3G can be canceled?

My hunch is they won't be too quick to offer to let you cancel your data plan. That being said, if you have enough of a sob story, anything is possible. I ended up getting $50 bucks off the purchase of my 1st gen Blackjack (when it was a brand new product and not being discounted yet) just because I expressed such frustration with AT&T's inability to complete my order in a timely fashion.

I've heard other people imply that AT&T will only remove data plans in the case of sob stories, which would make sense if it was a part of the contract a subscriber signed. What is odd is that all the statements I have found regarding data plans and the iPhone include words that make it sound like an option. Subscribers can add text to their phone plans online so why can't they add/remove a data plan? Is AT&T to finicky to allow its subscribers to do so?

Has anyone with a current AT&T iPhone plan--or anyone with a AT&T data plan--checked their plan options online to see if they can remove the data plan there?
