Rogers Introduces New Data Plan In Preparation For iPhone - January 26th, 2008, 02:34 PM #1 |
![]() Canadian carrier Rogers Wireless has made plans to undergo a series of changes to it's cellular data service in an attempt to prepare for devices like the iPhone. According to a tip, they will begin offering a new version of their $20 monthly Communicate Package. The new package will include both unlimited internet access from a phone, and 2500 SMS text messages, 1000 MMS picture or video messages, and calling extras such as voicemail and caller ID. Rogers service is believe to nearly mirror similar plans as AT&T in the US, although far more SMS messages (you lucky Canadians, you). Like the American plan, the unlimited transfers would only apply for "feature" phones rather than dedicated smartphones. Blackberries and Windows Mobile devices would have their own separate rates. Rogers will use each phone's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) to automatically determine whether a device is allowed to use an unlimited plan. It is expected that tethering one of these devices to a computer for use as a modem will also have an extra cost. It is believed that this move is in response to Bell's $7 data plan for the HTC Touch, but others believe that it is their way of preparing for the iPhone's arrival. [via Electronista]
