Sun And Samsung To Make Java Phone? - October 10th, 2007, 10:52 PM #1 |
![]() According to a quote of Sun Microsystems Inc. chairman Scott McNealy in South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo earlier today, Sun Microsystems Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. are currently teaming up to develop a mobile phone to challenge Apple Inc.'s iPhone. McNealy said Tuesday in Seoul that the two companies were working on a "Java phone" that would surpass Apple's iPhone in functionality and cost less, the mass-circulation JoongAng Ilbo reported. When asked for a comment, Samsung spokeswoman Lee Soo-jeong said that as of yet, "no decision has been made regarding co-development of the Java phone." She did say that a meeting has taken place between the two companies "to introduce the idea", but would not elaborate further. Sun Microsystems is by nature a computer server and software maker based in Santa Clara, Calafornia. They are the developers of Java software technology, which they made available for free on the internet. Since the stock market collapse of 2000, Sun has made an attempt to rebound in part with the growing open source movement. [via IHT]

cloning != killing - October 10th, 2007, 11:00 PM #2 |

Why does it seem now that every new phone that comes out is here to kill the iPhone. Are people scared of Apple. All the news is 'iPhone Killer', etc etc. Am I missing something or does it really seem that all the other companies are a little scared of what Apple is doing and the impact its going to have.

making something based on new ideas isn't a technology killer. thats like saying google was a yahoo killer, its just a different take on the same thing. 99% of phones are all the same thing right now. soon all phones will be upgraded to the level that iphone users expect and then something new will come along. its just the way technology progresses and helps us all. copying good ideas doesn't hurt, they could improve on it or just screw it up and no one will want to buy it so no harm done.

I am waiting for another company to release a cool phone. Can't a phone be just that? I mean, when iPhone was revealed it was a cool phone. It wasn't the Razr killer, it was just a cool new phone. The first company to not try and "kill" the iPhone and instead decides to develop a good looking phone with some nice features and UI is going to be the company that wins. Just make a new advanced phone, that is what Apple did.
