iPhone 3G 3.1.2 stuck in recovery mode -    #1
I used Pwnage tool and everything went fine until I synced my apps, music etc. It rebooted and was stuck in a boot loop. Now it's stuck in recovery mode. iTunes gives me an unknown error(9) when I try to restore it. I've tried the custom ipsw and Apple's to no avail. I've even tried creating a new ipsw with the same result.

Anyone out there with some suggestions? I'd be forever debted to you.

Is there a forum that's active with solutions anywhere? I've tried everything I could find via google from custom restore to iRecovery with no progress. I did get it to be in a boot loop - doubting that's progress though.

Have you attempted to place the iPhone in DFU mode and then attempting to restore to 3.1.2?

Yes. I've tried that numerous times hoping the iPhone would get the message that I was sorry.

Thanks for responding.

My warranty was up in July. I was going to add AppleCare before then but never did - moot point now though, lol.

I'm about to hit the genius bar and plead guilty telling them they can use me as an example if they fix it.

Hi, do what you can. The best thing I can tell you as for now is to let itouch/iPhone die and then try the restore again.

Thanks. I let the boot loop drain the battery down to nothing and tried it. Still a no-go. I emailed the guy at hackthatphone.com regarding his repair service. Hopefully he or someone else can be my hero.

I bought a blackjack II off craigslist to use temporarily. I don't know how anyone could use one of these things on a daily basis.

I had the same problem and I found this on apple support, I tried restarting and took the cable out of a USB hub, it worked

Good luck

Sorry that didnt help.
I once had an issue like this and purplerain detected it on boot and was able to re jailbreak. have you tried blackrain?
http://blackra1n.com/

failing that, there are number of older jailbreaking apps that will detect the iphone on boot and might kick it from the boot loop.

DFU mode it, then restore with regular fw. Then custom ipsw restore afterwards.

I guess I should list everything I've tried so people don't suggest things I've already tried. Sorry - I should've done that at the start.

I've tried every solution I could find including:
•everything on that Apple knowledge base page
•using another computer (another Mac as well as windows), even with previous OS's and versions of iTunes
•creating a new user
•completely reinstalling iTunes
•using a different usb cable
•using a different usb port
•resetting sync history
•recovery mode
•DFU mode
•iRecovery
•redsnow
•blackra1n
•recreating a custom ipsw with different firmware versions,
•restoring with a new download of Apple's 3.1.2 ipsw
•iFuntastic
•using a backup of a previous OS and previous itunes
•getting it back into a reboot loop and letting the battery die completely
•voodoo
•chanting to the "iGods" and offering sacrificial blood
I may be missing something that I've tried but I'm not sure.

There's got to be some brute force way into this iPhone but I have no clue in that regard.

Whenever I do the restore process, I get to the "Waiting for ipod/iphone" part and then the phone reboots with the screen flashing white, then the custom boot logo from the jailbreak ispw. It then just goes to Steve with his arms up in the air.

Thank you all for your replies thus far. Any other ideas, regardless of how wacky they sound, I'm open to hearing them.

Ok, so try recovery mode like this.

1. Turn phone off (Hold power/home until screen is blank)
2. Hold home button
3. Connect USB to computer while holding home button
4. That should put it in restore mode, just restore to 3.0 then jailbreak later

Hopefully this should work, it helped someone else on this forum.

Ok this is the only other thing I can think of, when I first jailbroke my iphone it got stuck in recovery mode, this program kicked it out so it started and showed the connect to itunes image with the emergency call slider. It's worth a shot since you have tried so many others.

http://code.google.com/p/independence/

It detects the phone in recovery or dfu mode and kicks it so the OS on the phone shouldnt matter.

Good luck

Thanks for that link. Unfortunately, it's not working. It keeps saying "Disconnected: waiting for iPhone" whether I'm in DFU mode or recovery mode. I even tried it on a fresh OS install on another computer.

I appreciate the your time and responses. Maybe something will come along but I just have to realize the fact that I need to find a replacement. I'm not eligible for upgrade until the end of December so it's a used one or pay out the wahoo for a new one.

Everything you have described as having tried, I did as well with no luck.

I went to the apple store today and did just what you thought about doing and they refuse to even touch it. It appears they are not even allowed to touch it if it's jailbroken.

...so we're kinda stuck with this...
