AT&T Says Tethering Not Happening In 2009 -    #1

After Steve Jobs' confirmation that Apple would work with AT&T to make tethering an option on the iPhone, we all had high hopes that it would soon become a reality. Unfortunately, AT&T recently corrected one popular news blog for saying that it would be ready this year.

9to5Mac was asked by an AT&T representative in an email to correct a post in which they had stated that tethering would be available in 2009:

Just reading again – where did anyone promise tethering by EOY? Where did you see that? We promised MMS by end of summer and ended up being a few days late for that…

This was after Steve Jobs's comment in response to a customer asking about tethering back in August 2008:

We agree, and are discussing it with ATT.

Not long after, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph De La Vega told TechCrunch in an interview at the Web 2.0 Summit that "an official, AT&T sanctioned method of using the iPhone as a 3G modem for a laptop is on the way 'soon.'" So just how long is "soon", anyway?

Blackra1n takes a whole 5 seconds to download and 30 seconds to run. Two minutes to reboot, 2 minutes to let Cydia load and close, 30 seconds to install Beejive. And a minute an $30 bucks to purchase it.

Within 10 minutes, any iPhone owner can tether.

Beejive allows you to tether? I just updated to 3.1.2 so I don't know how to tether anymore. That carrier hack that worked on 3.0 was awesome.

lol Major fail on my part. I meant PdaNet.

But now that MyWi is available for 3.1 and 3.1.2, it's $20 cheaper and a lot more convenient to tether.
