iTunes 9 Breaks Palm Pre Sync... Again -    #1

After the release of iTunes 9 yesterday, Palm Pre users are once again finding that their phones no longer sync with the latest version of the software. Of course this comes as no surprise considering that the Pre has not received authorization from Apple to sync with the software. In the past Palm has fixed iTunes syncing when it broke under iTunes 8.2.1 and we expect them to do the same.

PreCentral believes that Palm may slip the fix into the recently delayed 1.2 software.

Meanwhile I hear a strange noise coming from the abyss. Is that the sound of iPhone owners collectively not caring? I think it may be. Please let us know in the comments if you want to hear more about this sort of thing.

I am tired of hearing about it, but... -    #2
While it may seem petty, it is Apple's Application and I really think it is their right to have it only used for their devices if that is what they choose to do. Frankly, I really think Palm is doing this just to irritate Apple. I personally say purchase the rights to use iTunes or create their own application.

I agree with everything but the last part.

Palm isn't stealing or anything. Everything they're doing is completely legal. But if Apple wants to be stubborn and block it, it is their software after all and have every right to. Personally, I don't see why they would, and that brings us to why I disagree with your last sentence.

It wouldn't be logical for Palm to have to make their own music program when so many people already use iTunes. But who uses iTunes? People with iPods and/or iPhones. If you don't have an iPod or iPhone, there are better music applications you can use instead of iTunes. So the majority of people Apple is hurting by blocking iTunes sync with the Pre are its own customers.

Besides, the Pre syncing with iTunes is not going to hurt iPhone sales. No one's going to blow off the Pre because it can't sync with iTunes since there are still other ways to get music onto it. So why not let them sync and make a few bucks off of the ones that actually buy music?

Mostly we agree.... -    #4
I do agree that there could certainly be some benefit for Apple to have another device like the Pre also using iTunes. Like I said though, I think this is about 2 boys out in the school yard, and Apple doesn't like the other guy playing with its toys. Aren't we all a little possesive of the things we've built.

My real point is that is (and should be) Apple's choice on who they allow to use "their" application. I have no problem with the Pre using iTunes, I just think Palm should do the stand up thing and give Apple its due, if that's what Apple wants.

The part I disagree with you about is that this somehow hurts Apple's own users...how does it do that?

Obviously I meant the customers Apple is hurting are the ones with a Pre. They use iTunes for their iPods, and it would be nice if they could sync their Pre with it, too. But now they have to find another [longer] way to get their music on the Pre or wait for Palm to get it working again.

petty? yay -    #6
i like the fact that apple is being petty. the palm pre is supposed to be the iPhone KILLER (according to palm and the rest of the knuckleheads). if your phone is so great and u wish to be my competition then stop using my software. if u do want to use my software then get on your knees and beg! this is a competition (One that apple is winning by a big margin).

Palm NEVER advertised their phone as being an iPhone killer. That was other people who thought it would be before it came out. It's not even close to being an iPhone killer and everyone knows that, even Palm and Apple. It's more like an alternative to the iPhone.
