Dev Team Delays 3GS Jailbreak -    #1

The iPhone Dev Team has announced that they are delaying their iPhone 3GS jailbreak in the interest of those who have not yet purchased a 3GS but are planning to. They explain that they want to keep it under wraps until more people have adopted the 3GS so Apple doesn't break it before more people get a chance to use it. You can get a more detailed explanation at
their blog.

In other words, they are either clueless or GeoHot won't give them the code.

Or in other words... it's a very fixable hole that, if released will quickly be patched by Apple in the upcoming 3.0.1 software update. Their track record has been jailbreaking the new software releases quite quickly (in most instances) so I don't see the leap to your comment that "they are... clueless".

At first I was a little confused about the rationale for delaying - "not enough people have bought 3GS units yet". If the hole is easily patched, why not help the early adopters? Now I can see it a little bit. The 3.0 process communicates with Apple every time you perform a restore to get authorization (signatures) for your specific device. If you were trying to restore with an unsigned ipsw, you potentially would not get the needed signatures from Apple allowing you to restore using the modified ipsw. This is why they are suggesting that all 3GS owners go through a short process to get some signature info about your device:

http://www.hackthatphone.com/3x/ECID.html

The rationale as I understand it, is that if there is a much larger base of 3GS owners out there (not to mention all the units already produced and in inventory) who would be inconvenienced by an update to fill a hole, then maybe Apple would think twice before forcing the issue. Versus the scenario where a relative few owners would be impacted.

I am just like all of you - can't wait for a jailbreak. I can't do it myself so, I have to wait for those who can do it for me - as patiently as possible!

Geez 1 million were sold in the first weekend alone. How many do they want? Of course 1 Mil is only the beginning for the 3GS (no space!)

Zzzzzzzz. Wake me up when there is a software un-lock available for the 3GS.

Why would someone need to jailbreak anymore?

There probably aren't as many uses as before but for the real basics there's Cycorder which allows video on a non 3GS. And then you'll need FTP to get the files off. I personally like having ssh access so that you can tweak things. Some people still like to skin the phone which will always require a jailbreak. All of these things are obviously for a much narrower audience than before.

We'll be sure to wake you.

I don't think I'm going to jailbreak this time. The more I get used to not having iRealSMS, the more I can deal without it. I just seriously hope one day Apple implements their own quick reply so I won't even have 2nd thoughts about jailbreaking. If and when that day comes, my phone will be free of hacks forever. (excluding the tether hack)

Not a leap, and they have not been quick to respond with anything. On each and every jailbreak they have conveniently "delayed" release for one bogus reason or another. Who knows what the real reasons are. What we do know is that Geohot has already successfully jailbroken 3GS with a simple 10 line change to Redsn0w, what he hasn't done is passed this over the great deified "Dev Team". Why haven't they come up with it themselves?
