Tethering Activation 'Hack' Found Once Again For iPhone 3.0 [Updated] - June 16th, 2009, 09:34 PM #1 |
![]() Clever folks with clever tricks have once again found a way to enable tethering on iPhone 3.0. The workaround allows AT&T subscribers (among others) to enable tethering without hacking or paying a fee. It works by tweaking the carrier settings with an iPhone configuration profile. After installing the profile, tethering is automagically enabled! Rumor has it that you can enable MMS in the same manner, although the file currently available doesn't seem to enable it. We've heard that it might disable Visual Voicemail, although we haven't tried it yet. The easiest way to install the tweaked profile is to grab it from http://www.benm.at/help/ on your iPhone. After you install, tethering should be enabled. If anything goes wrong, go to Settings>General>Profiles and remove the profile. Everything should go back to normal. The site also contains profiles for tons of other carriers, mostly in Europe. Once we've tested the workaround, we'll let you know. If it requires some more tweaking, we may even post a version ourselves! Stay tuned... Update: We've tried it and it does disable Visual Voicemail if you're on AT&T. However after a bit of tweaking to the config file, we managed to get VVM and tethering to work. Click this link on your iPhone if you're on AT&T and let us know how it works!

It works! - June 16th, 2009, 10:01 PM #2 |

Well, the tethering works, but the phone gets hot to the touch really fast. I'm kind of scared to use it for more than a few minutes at a time! As far as the MMS goes, it still isn't working on AT&T yet. Well hopefully soon!

What're you trying to set up on your mac? Everything is done via the iPhone ... accept for syncing it via Bluetooth. The USB tethering happens by itself. It should show up in the list of available networks. :3

AT&T Carrier Version - June 16th, 2009, 11:07 PM #12 |
|
Hey all, after installing the ATT_US.ipcc what is the version of AT&T CARRIER that is shown on the ABOUT section of the General Settings? I used to have 4.0 and now I have 5.0.
Anyone that can check? Thanks! |

to activate MMS call AT&T and ask them to override the setting or whatever. I called and they said to call back after I installed 3.0 and they will gladly do it.

Be sure to remove the old profile in Settings>General>Profiles

I can only get visual voicemail to work if I delete all installed profiles. Reinstalled iphonealley profile and tethering works but visual voicemail is again disabled until I once again delete the profile. I guess I can install the profile when I want to tether and then delete it when finished.

Sorry but this might be stupid question. How does AT&T not know that you are tethering with the hack and charge you tethering fees?

It works great!
![]() But....do you think that ATT will know and apply some sort of strange per minute or per MB charge here? Now if only we can get MMS to work! Thanks for posting the Visual Voice Mail fix too! |

After deleting both profiles I still have no VVM back... even after re-boot and hard reset. I even restored my iPhone...no VVM still!
Help? |
