Kevin Rose: iPhone OS 3.0 To Bring Copy & Paste (And Background Processes?) - March 15th, 2009, 07:31 PM #1 |
![]() World of Apple reports that Kevin Rose leaked details about how copy and paste is to eventually be implemented during a live taping of the popular internet show Diggnation. According to Kevin, copying text is done by double-tapping on a word, which brings up two quotation marks that can be adjusted to select the text you want to copy. Once the text is selected, you can chose between copying, cutting, or pasting the text. Kevin also says in the video clip that he heard from a separate source that the update will bring the iPhone up to speed with the Palm Pre. We know the Pre will be able to run multiple apps at the same, so this may be what Kevin's source was referring to. Kevin Rose has been right about rumors like this in the past, so he could be right about this one.

Kevin Rose is full of it - March 15th, 2009, 08:38 PM #5 |

He also said that Qik was coming to the UNjailbroken iPhone too.
I'll wait until Apple's announcement on Tuesday before I believe anything that comes out of Rose's mouth.

is it just me or is this guy completely full of himself? Unlike the masses, I could never really understand the acclaim of their video podcast -- 5 minutes and i'd tune out and into something more interesting.
Anyway -- c/p sounds fathomable...but background apps & push notifications? I doubt it. I guess we can only dream. |

It's about time Apple. Now they've gotten down to the "important things" on the "to do list". I hope Kevin is right, but hope doesn't always come through.

Engadget says that the rumor is 3.0 will *NOT* have background apps, so that part does not catch up to the Pre. If this is true that's too bad. This is THE feature I need out of my iPhone for it to be a really useful device.

Enabling background Apps will slow the unit and degrade response time. THEN you'll be bitching about that. Some people can never be pleased.

I can see what you guys are saying - but seriously, how about giving the user the choice? It could be an option you have to turn on in the settings and the default could be to have it off. That way all the users who want to keep using their iphones as a toy instead of a productivity tool will never know the difference.

Alright. I had an idea.
If iPhone 3.0 is going to have a cut and paste feature on it that is going to be able to, for example, take a blurt of text from Safari and paste it into your e-mail, won't that require some sort of "background process" in order to take to blurt of text from one app to another? If this is correct, then the cut and paste feature would come hand in glove with background processes. At least, the ability to have background processes. Does this mean Apple will allow us to use this feature? Probably not. If Kevin Rose is correct. On the bright side, it does give us hope of seeing this in the future. Also, to all those who disagree in having background processes, the importance of having these are evident if you just observe what it will allow the iPhone to do. Allowing background processes will allow you to be chatting on AIM, while updating your calendar, or listen to Pandora as you would listen to your iPod. To the issue of it taking up to much memory. If 3.0 is another hardware release the phone might have more memory to run processes while holding up the other phone functions. Another option, would be, like already said, just being able to turn that feature on and off. Question: What other things would open up on the iPhone if background processes where allowed? Alex Posted on my MacBook. |
