Hi there,

I'm new here.. just signed up basically to ask the the following questions: is it safe to unlock an iPhone abroad and has anyone done it over USB 1.1?

I have a 1st Gen 8GB iPhone that I got in the UK on O2 the day it came out. Until recently I had no need to unlock, since the service I was getting from O2 (both in terms of signal strength and customer care) was excellent. However, a couple of months ago I moved abroad (to Spain) where I will now be living for the indefinite future.

Since my 18 month contract with O2 lasts until May, I have continued to use the phone with their SIM here in Spain. Of course, I don't make many calls here (I have a local phone for that) and only turn on data roaming in emergencies (like checking the football scores). With the contract running out in a couple of months, though, its time I started looking into my options.

I've found the following tutorial which I plan to use:
http://www.hackthatphone.com/20/pwnagetool_2_2_1st_gen_iphone_expert.html

But I have two concerns:
1. Since I'm in Spain, will I have any issues unlocking?
2. Since I only have a powerbook G4 867mhz, will I have any trouble unlocking it over USB 1.1

I'm concerned about something going wrong and ending up with a brick.

Sorry for the long post.. I would have written less if I had more time.

Cheers.
