2g or ipod touch?

Hi, my girlfriend wants either an iphone or ipod touch. she currently has a basic at&t cell phone with no internet plan. if she gets a 2g iphone and we unlock it, and use her sim card, can she access wifi and edge internet just like with the touch? i'm not sure which device i should recommend. thanks for your help!
