Following today's announcement of new iPods and the ability to make ringtones for your iPhone, iTunes 7.4 is now available for download. The new version adds support for all the newly announced iPods, including iPod touch. Also included is the necessary software to manage and upload purchased ringtones to the iPhone. The ability to purchase the ringtones will be made available sometime in the next week.

According to the update:

With iTunes 7.4, sync your favorite music and more with the new iPod nano (third generation), iPod classic, and iPod touch, plus create custom ringtones exclusively for iPhone with many of your favorite songs purchased from the iTunes Store. You can now also play purchased videos with closed captioning (when available), easily rate your favorite albums from one to five stars, and watch videos at a larger size inside the iTunes window.

Ringtones may be purchased from the iTunes Store for $.99 for all previously purchased songs. Songs not purchased on the iTunes Store cannot be used as ringtones.

Ringtones placed on an iPhone using software such as iToner are removed after syncing with iTunes 4.7.

Ringtones added with iToner are removed when syncing, even with the "sync ringtones" unchecked in the ringtones tab. I hope the developers can get on this and fix it soon. I don't want to sync my phone with iToner every time I connect to my mac and I really don't want to pay for individual tones.

Just about to post the same thing. It seems to erase the plist file. I'm looking into a reason and hopefully a solution

I am hoping that when the ringtones folder appears that we will be able to drag and drop our own ringtones (cut down in quicktime and converted to m4a) in and have them sync that way.

If not it'd be most efficient for hackers to get their hands dirty within itunes to figure out how to allow ringtone creation of ALL songs...

speaking of which, i smell another class action suit about this whole thing. Apple is not allowing ringtone creation of music we have imported from our purchased CD's and thus is monopolizing the iPhone ringtone market. I am no lawyer but this smells of questionable legality.

I upgraded to 7.4 and use iFuntastic also. My ringtones are still there after a sync. But now I cannot get iFuntastic to work after a sync to add new ringtones. Anyone else with success using iFuntastic after upgrading to iTunes 7.4, syncing, and then trying to use iFuntastic?

Hey guys,
Just to let you know I just updated and synced my iphone which has apptapp and some ringtones I put on the phone using SendSong. The ringtones are still on my iphone unharmed or deleted! Looks like Sendsong is the best way to make sure your ringtones stay on your phone if you don't want to pay for ringtones from apple.

After upgrading today, I tried to use AppTapp and iFuntastic. Neither work now. I've done a restore on the phone and still no luck. Any guesses as to why?

Guess it's not worth stating that technically ripping tracks to make your own ringtones is breaking the copyright for the medium that you bought - all Apple are doing is providing a legal, licensed way to make ringtones from those record labels/artists that it has negotiated the right to do so with ...

My iTunes says sync ringtones / all ringtones and I have my homemade ringtones intact.

I have shut down my mac and restarted. I have synced my iPhone and still all is well with my ring-tones.

There have been problems reported with iTunes 7.4

I assume the issue will be resolved soon, but right now iFuntastic will not function after you update iTunes
