View Full Version : iFuntastic v3 Released: You now have permission to go nuts

The moment you've all been waiting for has finally arrived. iFuntastic version 3 is here, and chock full of new features. Of course, the biggest feature request of all has been fulfilled - support for PowerPC processors. It also includes a <i>real</i> file browser which allows installing apps, uploading NES ROMs, and other miscellaneous files. But that's just the beginning.<!--break-->

<div class="bigdiggbutton">
<script type="text/javascript">
digg_url = 'http://www.iphonealley.com/news/ifuntastic-v3-released-you-now-have-permission-to-go-nuts';
</script>
<script src="http://digg.com/tools/diggthis.js" type="text/javascript"></script></div>
<style>#diggbutton{display:none;}</style>One of the most important new features in v3 is "Unshackling". No longer will you have to un-jail and re-jail your iPhone for every modifiaction. Once you unshackle, you're free to make any modifications you please while simultaneously maintaining iTunes' ability to access the phone. Very sweet.

The Home Screen section has been significantly updated. Just as you could in previous versions, iFuntastic allows you to rearrange the icons on your home screen, but it gets even cooler. You can now have multiple home screens with a different set of icons on each. Take that, Spaces. On top of that, you know have the ability to put backgrounds on each home screen as well as rotate them. Can you say "useful"?

<center><a href="http://www.iphonealley.com/images/storyimages/august07/ifun-home.JPG" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.iphonealley.com/images/storyimages/august07/ifun-home.jpg" /></a><a href="http://www.iphonealley.com/images/storyimages/august07/ifun-homefish.JPG" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.iphonealley.com/images/storyimages/august07/ifun-homefish.jpg" /></a></center>
<center><a href="http://www.iphonealley.com/images/storyimages/august07/ifuntastic_homescreen.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.iphonealley.com/images/storyimages/august07/ifuntastic_homescreen.jpg" /></a></center>

Ringtones has also been updated. Remember <a href="http://www.iphonealley.com/tips-and-tricks/create-iphone-ringtones-from-itunes-previews" target="_blank">that handy tip</a> on getting free ringtones from iTunes? Now you can use iFuntastic to rip iTunes previews for you. Simply create a playlist of songs from the iTunes Music Store and drag the exported version into iFuntastic. The songs are downloaded from the store and uploaded right into your iPhone.

The new File Manager is awfully cool. It can be used to install new applications, save and delete files, and everything in between. iFuntastic also allows you to fiddle with system images and change the carrier logo, as you could in the past.

According to bitSplit, (summarized) changes since the last version are:
<blockquote>* PowerPC support! Finally. Thanks for keeping the faith :-)
* One-time unjailing - called 'Unshackling'.
* Drag and drop any file onto the phone in the new 'File Manager' (formerly Browser :-)
* Edit text files directly on the phone.
* Drag and drop installation of native applications - no restart of the phone necessary.
* Info page: a one-stop-shop for all documentation (still sparsely populated right now, sorry.)
* Troubleshooting page: a one-stop-shop for pummeling the phone and inquiring about its status.
* Much improved ringtone installation.
* Drag and drop replacement of system sounds.
* Completely reworked Home Screen Editor. Place applications anywhere you want them (gaps are OK.)
* Support for multiple home screen 'pages'. Have up to 80 applications at your fingertips!
* Custom home screen 'wallpaper', better called home screen backgrounds, to distinguish from the 'real' wallpaper.</blockquote>

been using it for a couple days, its great! great work on this one guys... (i'm on powerpc :D)

If you have any problems, search for "iFuntastic" in your user Library and trash everything that comes up. That seems to be the best way to solve problems.

PPC is what Apple used before them moved to intel. It still doesn't work with Windows, but their will probably be work put into a windows version at some point in time.

Hi there and thank you for your great work with iFuntastic. Everything seems to go as planned, but in the last step of the Unshackle I get stuck. I've tried it 3 times all over again, I've tried to disconnect, I've tried to restart, but nothing works. I keep getting the message "Waiting for iPhone ..." and finally a pop-up saying "STOP-Communication Failure". Any clues here?

Well, that's not acceptable! Sorry to hear that.
What is your computer model?
You can 'Keep Trying' a few times to extend the time.

Must the iPhone really be fully restored in order for the unshackling to work? Or is it just a recommendation. I'd hate to get rid of all my installing and modding that I've done.

thanks.

First off, you need to have a Mac (intel, or PPC)

Then all you need to do is open up the package and drag the icon to your applications folder and then start it up! Just following the steps and you'll be good.;)

how do you install on PC?

You cannot currently install on PC, it is not out for you guys yet

Hello, great work but just to let you know the last step does not work for me as well. It keeps trying to connect to the iphone and finally times out. I am running firmware 1.0.2 in the iphone and a MBP running iFuntastic. All other releases worked great, just this one is having some problems.

I have found how to change the names, but for some reason it only works on the bottom (phone, mail, safari, ipod) to do so you go to File Manager and than click on the big folder and go to the bottom and choose application names. Click on Localizedapplicationnames but it only works on the the bottom and i can't get the others to change there names.

It works on PPC (POWERPC), which you have. Read the first post and it tells you that its avaliable for PPC. So it will work on any Mac now.

I haven't had that problem. I've just downloaded it again and it worked fine for me. Maybe there is something wrong on your end.

This program doesn't work on windows. If your trying to unzip it on a windows machine and then moving it over to a mac, you can use WinZip. But i doubt thats the case. As you will read above, there is not a PC version yet, and we do not know when there will be one.

I just did a quick look through, and it looks like you can change the 1,2,3..etc. Go to

/Applications/Page1.app/

And the file icon.png represents the numbers.

As far as the Dock Background, that shouldn't be too hard to change. Just need to find the image representing it and change it manually. I'll take a look and see if i can find the file.

hmmm.... i am not going to try it, because i would probably get the same result. Its probably because when it hooks up to iFuntastic, it automatically changes it back. There is probably a way around it, just gotta figure it out:p

Wipe that sucker clean before trying to unshackle. Then do Installer.app's script to put itself on and away you go. Or, now that we can, drag it straight on. I feel dumb.

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a convenient place to download 3rd party .app files to add to the phone via iFuntastic? I had previously used the installer.app ./get_intaller.sh method, but I like the idea of having multiple springboards.

If someone knows a quick and easy answer to my question, send me a message at cwicseolfor at gmail dot com

I use the installer.app on my phone and iFuntastic. Just install the apps you want, plug your phone in, and then the new applications show up in your applications list in iFuntastic and you can then place them where you want on your phone.

I haven't done a full restore, as suggested, and the app seems to "sorta" work overall... the shackling seems to work fine. That said, not all of my applications are showing up within the application, no matter how many times I "refresh". Maybe a restore before use would address this. I might try that this weekend, as it is preventing all of the applications from showing on the Home Page... within iFuntastic, they continue to show up on the iPhone itself just fine... basic app's too, like Stocks or Settings.

Also, no amount of rearrangement of the Home Screen seems to be working either, so the app is either buggy or a full restore really is the best way to go. I may test later, but not tonight.. at least, no plans for doing that tonight anyway.

is there a reason for not supporting the most popular platform, Windows?

FukWindows
August 30th, 2007, 01:40 AM
Quit the moaning about no Windows. Maybe the developer only has a Mac, maybe he hates PCs, maybe he has evidence that the majority of iPhone users are also Mac users (WTF cares about the majority of PCs anyway, it's iPhone users that matter for this program), whatever the reason...it's Mac only. Deal with it. At least now there's a PPC version. Go to a Kinko's or something. Your tears may have convinced mommy to buy you this toy, but it won't convince developers to re-code this thing any faster.

Rant's over. This is a giant step forward from 2.0 and 2.5. Minor thing: I echo the bug reported earlier that "Mobile" appears before a number of Apps on the main screen (MobileSMS, MobileCal...). I unshackled with a freshly restored OS (1.0.2 -- could that be the prob?), tried soft and hard resets. No luck. Also, is it me or do the fonts that display the name look a little watered down?

All in all, spectacular work! Huge props. Can't wait to play Mario on the train (although it's no small feat to get Mario's feet to repond to commands!)

I just don't see a "reset" [set back to normal] feature when you change your background or do changes to the apps.

Also, "blank/Empty" spaces are not really empty. They were replaced by a "forward -> Back to main page" application. So if you don't click on the app but on the empty space, your screen will turn black and bring you back to the main Window....

Are these being addressed? Kinda bothersome..

But other than that IT'S AWESOME, way to go.. PC people, stop complaining... Is not like there so much software already for you guys out there that isn't on the Mac..
Be patient.. it's time for us Mac users to have all the fun.. (Not like we never do)
Just go do some power point presentations or a spread sheet of how much you complain... (sorry.. had to get it out..)

I'm staying away from this one. Tried a whole lot of times. No go.

The worst part was the need for a restore. Totally a bummer. Lost:
Phone:
recent, favorites, voicemail
Maps:
all map bookmarks
Camera photos
All Installed Software:
Installer, Launcher, vt100 term, etc...

All of my hard work has been lost with this version. It might have been worth it if it really worked. I will definitely wait until more of you alpha test this for me.

But I don't like this. First and foremost my app names are messed up as mentioned before. "mobilephone" instead of "Phone" and "mobilemail" instead of "mail", etc... I have restored from scratch already and both times I have ended up like this: 1.0.2

I have already thought I bricked it. Things were messed up but I could not do a restore AT ALL. I would hold the buttons and all it would do it constantly re-boot to the Apple logo. Once I "shackled" it I was able to perform a restore. That was panic one.

Panic two, it hosed installer.app. I shackled, installed installer.app, unshackled to make the app visible in the list, did so and re-shackled. The app was not working at all. I had to re-install the app again to get it to work but not it is back to the regular icon and I am afraid to do anything!

Also the whole "shackling" and "unshackling" thing is BS. So was the jail method too but I never used it since I have a PPC Mac. I mean come on, its a pain having to re-boot, hold this, hold that and re-boot again! If it was just a soft re-boot fine, but its not.

If it were not for all the re-boots required to do the mods and the VERY limited editing abilities off this app, maybe I would like it. But I like the ability to edit the battery icons, the app icons, the text tags such as "slide to unlock", etc...

Instead I will use what I was using before. SSH, its fast, there is only a need to soft re-boot which takes seconds if you change a GUI item. If you upload a ring-tone or other items you dont even have to re-boot at all. Just open my FTP software and copy, delete, etc in seconds with FULL read/write access to all files of the GUI or anything else. Its like accessing a local drive!

Its a neat app, but not for a power user by any means who want to go beyond the very basics. I am sure features will be added and the only way I will use this is if SSH/FTP is implemented in some way. I am now restoring my phone to factory again and installing SSH!

Good luck!

I don't understand why you lost *anything*. iTunes backs everything up that isn't stored on your Mac to begin with, so this seems to be your problem. Don't blame the software.

Well, I backed up everything also.. But after unshackling / shackling my iPhone, it was not able to recover my restore.

The application is cool, but the only thing I really wanted to do was change the home screen background.. and I guess you can't do that without putting everything on there (ie. Page 1, Page 2, MobileNAMES).

I'm going to stick with the Installer.app -- everything was working perfect with that. Custom ringtones, ROM installation, moving around the Springboard / Dock, all of it was easier than this, and all of it was software within the phone.

Good job on iFuntastic though, dudes. =]

Peace!

I've tried it 3 times all over again, I've tried to disconnect, I've tried to restart, but nothing works. I keep getting the message "Waiting for iPhone ..." and finally a pop-up saying "STOP-Communication Failure". Any clues here?

Same problem here. Could it be Leopard by any chance?

Multiple screens! Great idea, wish I'd thought of it. Shout-outs are over-rated anyhow.

To everyone having problems with odd app names, you likely didn't do the second reboot after everything was installed. Try resinstalling iFuntastic and make sure you do that.

If you change your application names, you need to delete the application's icon.png and then refresh your app list. That's because the name is actually in the image itself

How can I install some of the themes from modmyiphone.com...example gunmetal theme or Metal Blue theme...?? or do I have to manually change the icons for each app if so how do I do that....

You have to do it manually

been using it for a couple days, its great! great work on this one guys... (i'm on powerpc :D)

If you have any problems, search for "iFuntastic" in your user Library and trash everything that comes up. That seems to be the best way to solve problems.

when i try to unshackle mine it always tells me to restart why is this??

I don't think it's been tested with Leopard

Here is a software which can be used in windows, iPhone Hack Toolkit Ver1.0 (http://www.pqdvd.com/download/minipackage.zip), just one click to insert a PKG file, you will get the iphone theme or homescreen background or others background picture. You can go iphone theme (http://www.pqdvd.com/iphonetheme.html) site to read the introduction.

This looks AMAZING!
(now we just need windows support!)

iWish there was a way to port the original Starcraft to the iPhone, it's a great game and I think it would be fun with the touch screen, I don't know how hard/easy it would be, or if it's even possible, but it would be cool

seeing how bejeweled pushes the limit of the iphone, i dont see games like that ever getting ported

I see in the Application folder the apps are called the same names they now show up a on the home screen. Can we simply rename the apps? (doubt it)

Somewhere they once got renamed to the non-mobile tagged names. Is this a text file we can edit somewhere?

I unfortunately use a PC, if I were to do cool things to my phone on a friends mac using iFuntastic, and then resynced it to my PC, would I loose all of the iFuntastic stuff?

i don't believe you would. It shouldn't be a problem.

Can someone please just give a straight forward answer?

Here's the issue that most of you are having (myself included):

You rebot, restore, re-whatever, but you still get a "Connection Failure" error. That's because you never officially, or successfully unshackled your iPhone. Step 2 flashes by so quickly that you can't read the screen. I took a screen shot and it said that a bunch of funky things were supposed to happen on the iPhone (and not to worry). I'm guessing that all of us who are having this connection problem, never saw that funky stuff on our screen. For some reason, it didn't unshackle our iPhones.

Now, does anybody know why?

Also, it helps when you add some specs so people know what you're working with.

PowerMac G5 PPC OS X 10.4.10
iTunes 7.4
iPhone 8GB 1.0.2
iFuntastic 3.0.3

Thanks for any help :)

i'll try to look into your problem. I actually have the same specs, but i haven't upgraded my iTunes yet, and I got it to work.

theres an explanation of how to edit the names in the text file, also on install.app there are programs that let you do it from your phone

Again, for those having problems with iFuntastic, please check out my thread on how to "fix things" http://www.iphonealley.com/forums/showthread.php?t=844

It seems that iFuntastic stopped working after upgrading to the newest iTunes 7.4. If you did that, there's your problem.

Thread is closed. Too many comments (which should have been posted elsewhere) make it difficult to resolve problems.

If you have further issues/questions/comments regarding iFuntastic, please post in the "Third Party Apps (http://www.iphonealley.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27)" forum.

Thanks!
