ok. I have an existing att contract. I want an iphone, but can't pay the up the poop shoot monthly fee. If I jail break an iphone, do I simply put my SIM card in it? Also can I still text, send pictures, check e-mail and sync with outlook (and oc course make phone calls) in my vista windows pc?

yes and no. you have to unlock it. The phone is locked not only to use an ATT sim, but to use an ATT sim activated thru itunes, with an iphone plan. if you unlock it then you can use your existing ATT sim and everything will work fine, except visual voicemail. So, basically the iphone 3G is out, unless you want to try one of those turbosim type things. all the syncing and email and text and everything will work just fine.

can I do the unlock or does it have to be someone who's good at doing stuff like that? If I can is there a good website that shows me how?

good question. yes, you should be able to do it fine, but you never specified if you are trying to use a new iPhone 3G or just the old version. The 3G cannot be unlocked yet unless you buy a special sim card adaptor, and even then I dont know what else you have to do.
To unlock your 1st gen iPhone just follow this guide:

- for windows: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1572

with this process you will create an unlocked version of the iphone software which you will then install onto the phone. when preparing the software you will want to check everything as if you are not on ATT. remember, if you have problems, restore the phone in itunes to the normal software and try again.

I don't have the phone yet, I'll probably look harder for the older one then. Trying to find something in my price range.

thanks
