dissecting iphone firmware!

ok so if i relable it as a .ipsw.zip i can then get in to all the folders add stuff etc, if i decompress the zip so can i put apps in to the apps folder then i can recompress it to a .ipsw.zip then delete the .zip part making it an ipsw again

then from here can i install it on to my iphone and will the apps and other mods work?

In theory that would work if you recompress it correctly. The iPhone is really picky about what it will and will not accept for restore. The way you're describing is more trouble that it's worth.

For this type of thing, you should use PwnageTool. There's a way to add your own packages, but I'm not sure how.
