Have you been keeping score of how many iPhone killers have been or are awaiting launch? We've been trying, but it's not easy. It's looking a bit like the race to make the fabled iPod killer, a device so advanced and economical and cool that it would stop the iPod right in it's shiny chrome tracks. Author for iPhoneFAQ.org, cjs, explained his view of the situation in an article concerning the alleged "battle to the death" some might say is under way among the devices.

"As it turns out, the devices all put forth some impressive specifications. The reality of the matter is that each phone will likely serve a particular segment of the population. Sure, the demographic for each will overlap with that of the others in several ways, but each phone still has it’s unique place in the market. These are not head-on clashes.

Also in the article, cjs compares the specifications for the iPhone to those of it's 4 projected leading contenders, the likely iPhone killers of the bunch (likely in comparison to the others, that is). He even went to the trouble to put in a very helpful chart with highlighted cells to show advantages for each phone (I suggest taking a look). Some of the advantages he lists for the iPhone are it's OS X operating system for it's usability, it's display screen and video at a 320x480 resolution, and music capabilities being that it's from the leading seller of media players.

Some things he doesn't take into account is the subsidization of other phones. He lists the fact that the iPhone's price is a bit under that of the competition making it difficult to speculate an advantage or disadvantage, but if the other phones are a subsidized as they are projected to be, then they will likely leave Apple at a disadvantage in that category. That said, it's a good article, if not else, just for the good visual.
