Iphone 1st gen problems. Plz help

Hello, I am new to the Iphone world and have been educating myself about all the hacks and apps that are possible on this device. After 2 days of research, I still don't have an answer. Here are the circumstances

I am not an att member... I have a new att sim card since i thought i may need it for the activate, unlock, jailbreak.
I bought a used 1st gen Iphone and the lady cleared the info (apple logo with white loading bar). After completion, I had the emergency phone call option.

I tried to call the field test, but it didnt work and since i dont have an active sim, i cant check it. I believe it is a 2.0 since it has the picture of the small usb and the field test wont work on 2.0.

So I tried to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4. During the process, I tried to put it into dfu mode. I ended up in recovery mode (screen with usb and itunes) and I am unable to do anything. I even tried to download the new itunes iphone update from apple. During the 3 hours it was downloading, i was getting a box with a yellow triangle and it something like "iphone is in recovery mode, connect to itunes and restore." After it was done, nothing happened.

right now I just want to get it back to the unactivated emergency status that i was at.

I was planning on using this phone as an ipod (i know, i could have got an ipod touch, but i plan on going to att when my contract is over)

I got it out of recovery mode. I took the new att sim card out and then ran the phone through itunes and now i am back at the activation screen with the emergency call.

I used the newest itunes to restore my phone. what do i do now to go to 1.1.4? do I take the sim out?

Are you trying to go from 2.0 to 1.1.4? Ive heard it can be done...but its VERY difficult and complicated. You can still jailbreak 2.0 with Pwnage Tool (but there is no Installer.app...but its coming...SOON)

Well what I want to do is activate, jailbreak and unlock my iphone. From what i have researched, I haven't found a way to that on my 2.0 unactivated iphone. I have seen the unlock and jailbreak tutorials on the internet, but is there any program to activate my phone without a sim card?

To my knowledge (i might be wrong) but you have to have a SIM card in order to activate the phone. Any ATT SIM card should work...i think. Sorry I dont know more...

Thank you for the response. Do you know if it has to be an active card? I bought a new ATT sim card from radioshack but i dont want to activate it at this time.

i dont think so...since the iPhone 3Gs came with inactivated SIMs. But im not sure.

I have 2g phone bought used and tried to pwnage with no sim and had no luck. I am an ATT customer but not for iphone. I installed sim and got it to work. I am not sure but I think you need activated sim,ATT or T mobile to get it unlocked. I asked on forum regarding sim in or out and got know reply.....my 2cents...hope it helps.
