In previous incarnations of iPhone software, it was possible to take screenshots using a built-in method, however, screenshots were only enabled after tweaking a preference file which required jailbreaking. Once the tweak was in place, holding the Home button while toggling the Ring/Silent switch would make the iPhone's screen flash and a screenshot would be taken.

With the iPhone 2.0 software, screenshots are now enabled by default. To take a screenshot, you now hold the Home button while pressing the Sleep/Wake button. Your screen will flash and a grab of the current screen will be placed in your iPhone's Photo app, which can then easily be imported using iPhoto or Windows Explorer.<!--break-->

Just curious what the practicality of this new feature is. I'm not complaining that it's in there, just what does Apple intend people to do with this ability?

Just curious what the practicality of this new feature is. I'm not complaining that it's in there, just what does Apple intend people to do with this ability?Honestly, it's really just to be able to take screen shots of cool games & apps and email them to your brother. At least that's what I'm going to do :-D

Ahh yeah, you're right. I forgot about the need to brag about achievements in the gaming realm. Good point. However, if Apple can't take the time to make my keyboard in Mail rotate in landscape, I find it hard to believe they added this feature just to allow for bragging rights.

It could also be a useful/alternative way to store information offline.

It also could be quite useful for error debugging. Have you ever had trouble describing to someone over the phone exactly what error message you're getting on a mis-behaving phone? Wouldn't it be nice just to send them a picture? I think it's a nice added touch, even if not used by most of us that often.

It's about time we have this feature. Great for sharing with friends if you are trying to explain things, or for bragging rights. Also useful just before your next back up just in case you phone doesn't recover happily and you need to remember some of your mail, network, and other settings.

Here's another tip you can save images from Safari and Mail too, just hold down on the image and click on "Save Image".

I got this tip from here, it also has other tips there too...

I was afraid to try it so i was going to wait, but I couldn't wait. It does work with first gen iphone running 2.0 firmware. I can confirm that. I still want to try the holding down an image but I haven't gotten on the internet in a while on my phone.

First gen iphone running 2.x software does save images when you hold it. Again, I am confirming that it works, and it works on unlocked iphones as well, not that mine is unlocked...because at&t wouldn't like that.... no... not at all....

This is great! I just came up with an easy prank to pull on our fellow iPhone owners using this. Take a screenshot of their home screen, go to the picture and hand it back to them. They'll eventually notice the photo controls, but some will probably go crazy with frustration first. :)

I have used it a ton to remember stuff from the internet for later or to show a new app to a friend. Lots of uses.
