As a phone my Nokia 6120 works MUCH better then the first gen iPhone. That's why I never bought an iPhone last year.
iPhone speaker phone = Crap
iPhone speed dail = Crap crap
iPhone general phone audio = more crap
I hope Apple fixed all of the crap on the iPhone

I would reply to the other post of yours but it seems we may be able to strike discussion about just this topic.
I know the speaker phone was crap but my superhearing fails me when it comes to the primary speaker quality. Just about all phones sound like they have the same internal crap speaker to me.
Side note, would you happen to Robert Hazelrigg of the One Minute Tip?

No I never did the One Minute Tip. You are thinking of someone else. I have done reviews on the MyMac, MacAttack, and the Mac Review Podcast(s) amongst others. You may know my name from there.
I did a bunch of testing before I bought my Nokia years ago. It really is a great candy bar phone with an awesome built-in speaker phone.
Moreover, I did a bunch of tests and compared the iPhone audio quality last year when it first came out. The test results were awful. The iPhone is really bad when in noisy areas. And not only for the user but the call recipient as well. The first gen iPhone picks up a lot of background noise.
Then there is it's reception. AT&T's coverage in most areas blows but the old iPhone just made matters worse. My Nokia always had 2 to 3 bars higher then the iPhone in the same location at the same time. Hopefully the new plastic back will fix that error on Apple's part.
My take at the time was; if you need a really good phone the iPhone (1st gen) is not for you. BUT if you need email, internet, music and syncing with Apple hardware the iPhone was most absolutely for you.
For me I passed on the iPhone last year for a number of reason none of which were cost. This year however cost is holding me back. Our economy sucks. My job isn't to steady, and the price of gas is driving the price of everything else up. So I question if I really need all of the bells and whistles the iPhone has to offer.
I am certain that I'm waiting to see what Apple does to the iPhone for the Christmas push in Sept/Oct of the year. By then we'll know about all of the phones short coming and/or issues.

You are Robert though? Man, sorry I thought you did the One Minute Tip. I'm trying to replay things in my head and it still sounds right. I do listen to those shows however so that may have been where I heard your name. Good to see you around though reguardless.

One of the improvements was supposedly "improved audio" So now we can only wait and see if there is an improvement. Maybe stereo speakers? That would be nice!

Well from the guided tour, it labeled on of those speaker-looking-things on the bottom as actually the speaker and the other as a microphone so I highly doubt we'll see stereo speakers, unfortunately.

No prob, Robert! I feel bad for thinking you did that One Minute Tip thing though. All I remember is hearing your name associated with some kind of different item each time. Now I'm thinking you did kind of a pick-of-the-week product review type thing. Am I getting warmer?

YUP it was called "speedy review". Then it was just my own segment.

I thought an upgraded speaker was on the list of 3g new stuff. Can anyone confirm the speaker being any better?

A few people said it was much better. I think it still sucks compared to my Nokia

Well any phone better than the iPhone 3G has got to be a real step up from my BB8830. I just got the iPhone 3G and found conversations a lot more clear than the BB. Just about any background noise hitting the BB's microphone cut out the speaker sound. I rarely have to say "say again" when I'm using the iPhone.
