Today, Ed Zander, CEO of Motorola, took the stage to introduce a few new products into the world. Worth mentioning is the new Q9, Z8, and new RAZR2.
There isn't a whole lot to be said about these phones. The Q9 is a newer, thinner version of the Q that now uses Windows Mobile 6 and in some cases comes equipped with Linux/Java. Just like the iPhone, it has been outfitted with light sensors to adjust the display brightness depending upon your environment. It plays back video via Windows Media Player (yawn) and has shortcut keys to make up for the complicated menu system. In my opinion, the ONLY thing that makes this phone better than the iPhone is the HSPDA. In the demonstration, the presenter illustrated the exceptionally quick speed at which HSPDA can download in contrast to non 3G devices. It's very significant.
They also introduced the Z8 which is, according to Stuff Magazine, "Powerful as a horny ox". I think what they meant to say was "uuuug-ly!". The only defining feature of this phone, albeit an interesting one, is it's ability to bend slightly to fit the contour of your face when fully extended. Again, it uses Windows Mobile (crash hazard) shortcut buttons for complicated menus and only supports micro SD cards up to 4GB in size.
Motorola is also announcing a partnership with Universal Pictures exclusively in Europe allowing users of the new phone to watch feature films on their phones. Whoopdie friggin doo. Also, EA announced that they would kick in a snowboarding game for the devices. The most interesting thing said was that they believe the device is better than an iPod because it can download music wirelessly. Keep in mind, the friggin thing needs a shortcut button to navigate to your music, how difficult do you think it would be to actually PURCHASE something with it.
Only thing I was moderately impressed with was the new RAZR2. It no longer has the "double chin"[sic] and it has a HUGE screen on the front of the device. It also runs that craptard Linux/Java thing. I hope it works out, I really do.
So thanks Eddie for such an entertaining (laughable) day. Good luck trying to kill the iPhone with your "media monster".
