Is the gps device something that can only be on the iphone 3g or could that be a hack for the first one?

I'm pretty sure that there is a hack accessory you may be able to find on the internet that gives GPS functionality to the regular phone. I'm not sure, but if you're looking for a way to get GPS, try that out.

if such a beast exists.. that isn't GPS.. its a triangulation result from the mobile phone network. Which the iPhone already has... I believe... happened in the last big firmware update.

I might be wrong on this but in the latest beta my phone was able to track me accurately and in real time down the street... doesn't that qualify for gps, or is that still just triangulation?

First of all it's not going to be a "hack" accessory. It's actually just going to be an accessory with GPS receiving equipment.

The GPS that you're experiencing now is actually a pseudo GPS which was determined based on cell phone towers, near by wifi access points and the internet NOT GPS.
