Although Apple has announced the iPhone 3G at the fantastic price of $200, first generation iPhones are still selling strong on eBay. Unlocked 8GB iPhones are going for about $350 on average, and 16GB phones for even higher. Why? A couple reasons come to mind. The first and most obvious is that the iPhone's data plan is cheaper than the 3G's. $10 a month adds up over two years, especially when you add text messages on top of it. Even more compelling is the unlocking. It may take some time before we see an unlock method for the 3G. Even then, it'll be difficult to acquire one with AT&T's in-store activation policy. Let's also not forget that first-gen iPhones are no longer in production.<!--break-->
A few examples of this phenomenon: <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Used-UNLOCKED-8GB-Apple-iPhone-1-1-4-Any-GSM-SIM_W0QQitemZ230260731160QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item2 30260731160&_trkparms=72%3A552%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14" target="_blank">8GB sold for $370</a>, another <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-iPhone-AT-T_W0QQitemZ330243404744QQihZ014QQcategoryZ3312QQss PageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem" target="_blank">for $400</a>, and a <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-iPhone-16-GB_W0QQitemZ250258768794QQihZ015QQcategoryZ3312QQs sPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem" target="_blank">16GB that went for a whopping $570</a>.
So what should you do if you're still hanging onto your first generation iPhone with plans of buying the 3G? Our advice is to sell it as fast as you can. The price on these babies will only go down the closer we get to July 11th. Therefore, the key to making enough to fund a brand new iPhone is to go without a phone for a month.
And when you sell that iPhone, make sure it's unlocked. It's super easy and adds tons of value to your phone. Hack that phone has guides for unlocking the iPhone on both <a href="http://www.hackthatphone.com/114/iphone_iliberty_windows.html" target="_blank">Windows</a> and the <a href="http://www.hackthatphone.com/114/iphone_iliberty_mac.html" target="_blank">Mac</a>.
So will you be selling your iPhone now that you've seen the glory that is the iPhone 3G or sticking with your trusty first gen?
