While it's widely accepted that there will probably be a new iPhone launched this month, if not at least announced, the possibility exists that there won't be, so the decision to take the risk of selling your iPhone ahead of any announcement is something you'll have to decide for yourself. However, when the time comes, Gizmodo's Christopher Mascari has a few things to remember about selling your 1st generation iPhone. If you play your cards right, you might even get more than what you paid for it.<!--break-->

Despite the fact that you and your iPhone have been together for a while already, it can still fetch a good price. If you follow these points, you should get a decent price:

<ul>
<li>Include all (or as much as possible of what you have) of the original accessories and packaging. Your auction will be going up against new iPhones with all new stuff, and buyers want a complete set.</li>
<li>Unlocked iPhones will sell for more money than locked ones. An unlocked 8GB iPhone usually sells for more than $400, and a 16GB for over $500, sometimes significantly more.</li>
<li>Shorter selling time is better. It puts pressure on the buyer to make the purchase. Of those examined, the 1-day selling time had the best results.</li>
<li>A low starting price is better. So is not listing a reserve price. It attracts more watchers, and although the lack of a reserve price <em>could</em> mean that it gets sold for way less than you bought it for, it's unlikely and hasn't happened so far.</li>
<li>Allow worldwide shipping for the device. Many of the people who want an
unlocked iPhone don't live in a country that doesn't have the iPhone yet. That said, it is unusual, but most of these get shipped to the US anyway. Still, it seems to help.</li>
<li>It's important to include words that people will be watching for in the title and keywords, like "no reserve", "NR", "Unlocked", "Jailbroken", "Any GSM SIM," "Original Box" and "Accessories", for instance. Make sure that if you ship worldwide that it shows in the title. Adding a subtitle for an extra 50 cents isn't a bad idea. Something like this would work:
<blockquote>"<b>UNLOCKED Apple iPhone 8GB Jailbroken Any GSM SIM
Original Box and Accessories SHIPS WORLDWIDE</b>"</blockquote></li>
</ul>

Using the above tips, Christopher Mascari was able to sell his 8GB iPhone for US$425 ($410 after expenses).

Do you sell with a sim? And if you get the phone jail broken can it work with any carrier or does it have to be unlocked as well (sorry if they both mean the same thing).

Jailbreaking simply gives you access to the phone to perform further modifications. Unlocking actually lets you use other carriers. So you'd need to unlock the phone. Jailbreaking is usually required for that to happen. Also, sell the phone without a SIM. The buyer uses thier own.

I just sold my 8GB on eBay for 225. So cheap because the screen was all cracked up. People will do whatever they can to get their hands on a cheap iPhone it seems, regardless of any defects.

with the prices of the next gen iPhone being so much cheaper, how much could you possibly make if they can go buy a new iPhone for a much lower price?

Seriously, what's the use of trying to sell them... if you get any bids at all, they are going to be so low that you will make no money of them what-so-ever...

I think its a waste of resources to try and sell it on e-bay since you have to pay to list it, unless you put a bunch of good accessories included and don't try to make any money off of it, you MIGHT have a chance... it's a long shot...

Is it me or do you think the value of the first gen iPhone will stay the same on ebay or go up?

ATT's in-store (or with 30 days ) activation might be a blessing in disguise for us 1st gen owners. There will be many people all over the US and world who will still not be able to use the "official" carriers. Their only hope might be the 1st gen iPhone, unless they are willing to may mucho fees.
Also I wonder how long it will take to jailbreak the 2.0 software?
There may just be a window of opportunity right after June 11th for selling Jailbroken, Unlocked iPhones to the world, as people find out how hard it will be to get unlocked 3G iphones.
Of course this is coming from the point of a current "happy" ATT customer, and who would be willing to part with the 1st gen iPhone is I think I can get enough to buy the 3G one.

I'm hoping to score a 1st gen iPhone from someone upgrading. I hope that the prices won't go up significantly. Maybe there will be a local seller on craigslist that doesn't know any better :-)

Again be careful with craigslist.

Out here in NY people will tell you they will give you $$$ for your iphone, you meet them somewhere and they jump you and take your phone. It happens a lot. If possible ship the phone after receiving payment securely online.

Beware craigslist!

You talk crazy talk yo...I was on eBay last night. People are selling these babies for $100 + regardless of condition! Some people are selling them "as is" for close to $200 (with broken lcd and glass). I will be selling mine soon cuz I accidently dropped it on the floor and there is some glass breakage, but otherwise no internal damage and it works great. Even if I get $75 out of it I will be happy.

Don't knock something you are clueless about---there is a market for "old iphones" definitely...especially in Dubai... ;-)

What is the preferred jailbreak/unlock method (if there is one) currently? Ziphone was great last time I used it but since then pwnage has risen to fame. Anyone have a strong preference either way with a reason?

I helped a friend sell an 8gb on ebay. Granted it looked brand new and came with all the paperwork we still got close to 380 for it. :) Bumping up my feedback!!!

I never could have foreseen this demand for gen 1 phones. I remember right after 3G launched, the expected value of the gen 1 phone was less than a hundred bucks. Now they are once again selling like hotcakes.

Does knowing this speak painful truths to you AT&T?

(I doubt it).

I sold three iPhones today; mine, my girlfriends and my fathers.

3 8GB iPhones that were purchased during Christmas of '07. I posted the first 2 with a starting bid of $100 and a buy it now price of $270. This included all the original boxes and accessories as well as Agent 18 cases and anti-glare screen protectors.

Before I was done posting the third the first 2 had already been sold, so I juiced up the buy it now price to $350 and sold it within a couple of hours.

Total Sales Price = $890
PayPal Fees = -$25
eBay Fees = -$14

Not too shabby...

Not too shabby indeed. Congrats, friend!

I looks like my buddies that bought refurbs for a reduced cost will actually come out ahead on this one. Who knew?

You could of got more. I jsut sold another for a friends topping 365 for an 8gb before fees and everything. I am curious to see the price after the 3g release date. I don't think it will drop that much, however ebay may become flodded with 1st gen iphones. Just like the release date of the ps3. I believe 40,000 popped up on ebay within the 1st 30 minutes.
