According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/TechnologyMediaTelecoms07/idUSN1433209320070514">a Reuters report</a>, Nokia CFO Rick Simonson believes that with the advent of Apple's iPhone, consumer interest in pricier phones may grow.

During Reuters' Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit, Nokia's CFO stated:

<blockquote>"The (U.S.) consumer ... hasn't had a lot of choice to go out and purchase these kind of higher-end, feature-rich multimedia devices. If that can help that market grow, I think that gives us an opportunity."

[...]

"Don't get me wrong, they will bring some things to the table that we have to be responsive to, but we have been investing in this area or some time,"

[...]

"We are leading in multimedia convergence."</blockquote>

Nokia has been trying to create a market for multi-media smart phones for some time, but consumers haven't been biting. The CFO believes that the success of the iPhone will create a great opportunity for Nokia and open consumers' eyes to the prospect of rich multi-media in a handheld device.

Of course, this all sounds to me like Nokia simply plans to leech off the success of the iPhone, but what do I know. This aspiration could be as benevolent as they make it out to be (yeah right).
