What is everybody's compression rate of choice? Also formats- do you use mp3, mp4, FLAC, .aiff, .wav, etc? Why?
I usually go with 320kbps mp4. Not really sure if it helps, but I figure I might as well. Then again, it does take up more of my 8GB that way.

Anything over 192 MP3 works for me

MP3 V0 is my format of choice. VBR sucks, and so do other formats like m4a and flac simply because almost nothing plays those.

I personally prefer 192 M4A or AAC audio. I think it's way better than MP3 at lower bitrates. The 256 M4As from iTunes are excellent.

I'm an audiophile. I like my music to be 1411kbps Apple Lossless (.aiff) files. ;)

Mike, you've really got to give M4A a try. It's seriously way better. Even the dude who invented friggin MP3 says M4A is the successor to MP3.

Until now I have used variable rate mp3s. They average around 200kbps depending on the genre. I'd be happy to switch to M4A if I knew of a good, free ripper.

Most 192 and some 128. But I am still waiting for 5.1 concerts so you hear the singer on stage working from one side to the other and so on that would be very cool.
Or for the dance fans just imagine the idea to have 5 boxes controlled separately. I do those experiments on my own and it sounds quite nice but I am no big music artist, I played cello at my kids ages so I have this some kind of feeling what a rhythm should be like and so on but my vocals ... quite bad :D

I have hard copy of most every tune in my library. I import at 192 MP3. This way I can do more cross platform digital things. That is why it is on my computer.

Yeah 192kbps MP3, the best choice definitely to keep up a high-quality sound with a minimum size.

i generally use v0 and v2 for most music. It has the best quality versus size ration in my opinion!:)

Some songs don't sound bad at 128 but I usually go for 192.

definitely v0 if I can find a version, but 192 is pretty much the cut-off. lossless is nice, but I always found most music today (unless you listen to some obscure electronic trip-hop rare vinyl shoegaze 70's throwback tracks) never need a bitrate higher than 192 to able to hear every detail required to enjoy a song
