View Full Version : Guide to add custom ringtones to your iPhone
Mubs
July 13th, 2007, 02:28 AM
I've compiled a guide for anyone that wants to have a custom ringtone on their iPhone. This can also be used as a base for adding other modifications to your iPhone. I've also assembled a nice little package with everything you need to follow my guide. At the moment, this version of jailbreak only works on intel Mac's. The universal one I found didn't work correctly so I'll let you know when I find a universal version.
I have to start off by saying that all the hard work was not done by myself. It was done mostly by "geohot", "nightwatch" and "ziel", as well as the rest of the guys in #iphone-dev. Thanks guys, you rock!
<b>Although highly unlikely, messing with your phone this way has the potential to screw things up beyond repair. If you do feel you have messed something up, in most cases a simple restore will do the job. I am not responsible if you brick your iPhone.</b>
It's a good idea to make sure you have a backup of the stuff on your iPhone before starting this procedure.
Keep iTunes closed throughout this guide as it may complicate things. If it opens, pause to close it, then continue. You'll also want to keep your iPhone docked and plugged into the computer during the entire process.
<b>Step 1:</b> Download the <a href="http://rapidshare.com/files/42629387/iPhone_goodies.zip.html" target="_blank">magical package of goodies</a> and unzip them to your desktop. I'll be assuming you've done this throughout the guide.
<b>Step 2:</b> After you've unzipped your goodies, pop open the Terminal located in the Applications > Utilities folder.
<b>Step 3:</b> In the terminal, type the following -
<blockquote><i>cd ~/Desktop/iPhone\ goodies/tools/</i></blockquote>Hit return, then type
<blockquote><i>./jailbreak</i></blockquote> and press return.
<b>Step 4:</b> Restart your iPhone into soft recovery mode by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and Home button at the same time. Keep these two buttons held until you see a yellow exclamation mark with the words "Please Connect to iTunes" at which point you can let go. You will see a spinning gear shortly after while the iPhone boots. When it's done, it will restart.
You are now out of jail, lets do something fun! How about setting up the CTU ringtone?
<b>Step 5:</b> In the same terminal window which is currently in the "tools" directory from before, type the following -
<blockquote><i>./iphoneinterface</i></blockquote>Hit return. You should now see the following:
<blockquote><i>Waiting for phone... established.
iPhone state: Activated
type "help" for help
iPhone:/#</i></blockquote><b>Step 6:</b> Time to upload your CTU ringtone. The following is all case sensitive so I recommend copying and pasting. At the prompt, type -
<blockquote><i>cd Library/Ringtones</i></blockquote>Hit return, then type -
<blockquote><i>putfile CTU.mp3</i></blockquote>Hit return again. Type <blockquote><i>quit</i></blockquote>and press return. You should now have the CTU ringtone on your iPhone. You can choose the ringtone from the Ringtone preference pane in Settings.
But wait a tick, iTunes doesn't understand what's gone on with your iPhone. What do you do? It's time to put yourself back into jail so you can continue using your iPhone normally. Don't worry, your sweet new ringtone will still be there.
<b>Step 7:</b> Assuming that you've still got the magical folder unzipped on your desktop, type the following into a terminal window -
<blockquote><i>cd ~/Desktop/iPhone\ goodies/tools/</i></blockquote>Press return
<b>Step 8:</b> Type the following -
<blockquote><i>./iphoneinterface</i></blockquote>Hit return. You should now see the following:
<blockquote><i>Waiting for phone... established.
iPhone state: Activated
type "help" for help
iPhone:/#</i></blockquote><b>Step 9:</b> At the prompt, type -
<blockquote><i>cd System/Library/Lockdown</i></blockquote>Hit return, then type -
<blockquote><i>rmdir Services.plist</i></blockquote>and press return.
<b>Step 10:</b> Right now you're pretty naked as you've just removed the Services.plist from your iPhone. Don't worry, we have another in the tools folder ready to go.
To upload the new copy, type -
<blockquote><i>putfile Services.plist</i></blockquote>press return and type -
<blockquote><i>quit</i></blockquote>
hit return once more and you're done!
<b>Step 11:</b> Changes will not take effect until you restart your iPhone. To do so, hold the Sleep/Wake button and Home button at the same time until the screen goes black. Turn it back on and your iPhone should now be in correct working order able to be synced. The CTU ringtone should still be available.
There you have it! I've also included some tweaked AT&T logos for your tweaking pleasure. If you're feeling adventurous, they go into the System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/ directory on your iPhone.
<b>Note: Everything you want to upload to the phone must be located in the "tools" directory.</b>
Have fun!

Haha, no problem. I hope it doesn't wreck your phone. Make sure you follow the instructions and don't stray from the path. If you know your way around the terminal, it should be easy.

I had a problem getting the iPhoneInterface app to see the phone at first. I managed to get it working by undocking, redocking and then running it again. I had to cd back to the /Desktop/iPhone\ goodies/tools/ directory before I did it, though.
Just FYI for everyone!

Nice. I must say, Michael, you're either very brave or a complete idiot. I don't think you're an idiot, but I'd never do that with my iPhone. You know, the one I don't have yet that I keep talking about because I don't have it yet but want really bad, and would probably be able to work better and more effectively with.
That reminds me, you're not paying me enough.

That's remarkably straight-forward, and I suspect should provide ample additional tricks.
While I ponder my choice of ringtone, I'm curious - why the replacement of Services.plist?

The jailbreak program replaces the original services.plist, among other things, to make the phone read and write capable outside of the iTunes sandbox. The Services.plist included with the other goodies is the original file which reverses the change allowing iTunes to see the iPhone correctly.

I don't think there's any problem with doing that. I copied an entire Beatles song and it works perfectly. Have you verified that the song will play on the phone in the iPod? If it doesn't play there, it likely won't play at all.

No, I don't think you need to convert it. The CTU ringtone he provided was .mp3 so anything iPhone can play should work

Did not work for me. Says "Looking for iPhone: pairing issue"
does this have to be run on the computer the phone was activated on??? My iPhone was setup/iTuned on a Powermac G5 but this software only runs on an Intel Mac so I used my Macbook.

I don't think that matters. Make sure that you have the latest iTunes on the MacBook. I believe the software needs iPhone sync capabilities that iTunes provides. Try restarting your iPhone, computer, and re-docking. Otherwise I'm not sure. Maybe Mubs could help if that doesn't work.

I had just finished updating OSX and iTunes (7.3.1). I also did a reset on the iPhone. None of that made any difference. I get a pairing issue message with jailbreak and the iphoneinterface programs.
It IS interesting to note that inserting the iPhone into the cradle does NOT invoke iTunes as it does on the Powermac. There is a "ding" noise like a USB device being recognized but that is it.

I played some more. I started iTunes and let it see the iPhone which it did.
Then, running ./jailbreak works differently from what I got before...
Looking for iPhone
Sending Files......
But, I cannot seem to get the next step.... soft reset, to work. I hold the sleep/wake and home buttons (forever) but do not get the yellow message... it just gives me the Apple logo and then black screen and it is off. does this mean it did not really run jailbreak properly???

Now that I think about it, that's exactly what you needed to do. If jailbreak cannot see your iPhone, you may need to run iTunes and then quit out of it. However, you can't have iTunes running while you're doing the jailbreak process.
I'm not sure what the problem is with the soft restore; you may need to try doing it again. Make sure you're pressing both buttons all the way. Let me know if it doesn't work out!

Success!!! it all works now.
my final problem was the iPhone needs to remain IN THE CRADLE when doing the soft reset..... this was not clear from the docs. I was taking it out of the dock and doing the reset in my hands.
So, the keys to the problems I had are:
1. Start iTunes at least once and have it see your iPhone. Be sure to exit from iTunes.
2. when running ./jailbreak, LEAVE THE PHONE IN THE CRADLE when doing the reset step.
then it all works properly after that.
Thanks to all!!!

I'm glad everyone on here has had such a terrific experience doing this, but I feel like I should contribute my cautionary tale lest anyone think nothing can go wrong. I followed all of the instructions exactly and was able to get the CTU ringtone, as well as another telephone-ringing mp3 I got off the internet, onto the iPhone. But then I got greedy. I tried to put a couple of my own (music) mp3's on it, and something went awry. It may have had to do with the fact that I'm pretty command-line ignorant, and I didn't quite know what to do with a filename that had a space in it. Beyond that, I'm honestly not sure what could have gone wrong. Everything looked fine in the terminal down to the lockdown process.
Afterward, however, iTunes refused to recognize the phone. It realized I was plugging in an iPhone, but gave a cryptic "cannot connect" message, followed by a string of characters. Nothing I did seemed to fix the problem. I tried running through the whole jailbreak procedure again, to see if that would fix things up, but jailbreak couldn't connect either. I even did a complete reset (the one that deletes all content and settings) from the iPhone, to no avail. And, since iTunes couldn't connect with the phone, I couldn't do a software restore.
SO... I decided to take the phone to the Apple Store, hoping they wouldn't figure out I had done something MOST LIKELY WARRANTY-VOIDING. Luckily for me, they didn't. But they also couldn't fix the problem, though they didn't really try anything I hadn't already done. I ended up walking away with a brand-new phone (warranty replacement), but I'm a little disinclined to try the whole custom-ringtone thing again until Apple officially supports it. I mean, with Apple, fool me once...
Just my $.02. Have fun, and good luck!

Running jailbreak essentially replaces services.plist with a modified one. This enables access to the disk, but it has a side effect. iTunes only recognizes the 300MB partition instead of the iTunes one.
The reason you rmdir services.plist and then putfile the other one is because the one you're putting is the original and reverses what jailbreak did. You need to restart your phone after you putfile the new services.plist to get iTunes to recognize your phone correctly again.

first - to unBrick a iPhone, put the unit into Restore mode (sleep/wake button and home) Then Sync with iTunes, it will let you restore to factory.
Second, SUCCESS!! :) :)
My problem was my services.plist file must have been corrupted somehow.
I Dl'ed a new one. and everything went smoothly!
As I wade deeper in, I will try and do more and more customizing I know in a months time there will be a iPhone Toolkit with everything in one nice GUI package! - but for now its FUN to play!!

How do you know you're in "restore mode?" Is that when you get the yellow "Please connect to iTunes" message? Because even then, iTunes wouldn't talk to the iPhone.
Sorry to be a bother... just really curious about this one.

For those that might be interested...
I just replaced all the original wallpapers with my own. Just make your own 320x480 images and number them 01.png, 02.png, 03.png, etc. Then make a thumbnail version that is 75x75 pixels and name it 01.thumbnail.png, 02.thumbnail.png, etc.
Once you are running iPhoneInterface;
cd /Library/Wallpaper
If you ls you'll see the stock ones. Oddly enough they skip some numbers
I loaded 19 and removed the rest with the rmdir command (rmdir 22.png)
Remember to upload the Services.plist file before you exit.

Awesome! I'm not aware of the iPhone toolkit you're talking about, but I do have all of the images iPhone uses. I can imagine that you can achieve quite a bit of customization by replacing these. I used a few to make the custom carrier logos.

You know when you're in the restore mode when you see the yellow exclamation mark with the "Please connect to iTunes" text. iTunes should talk to the phone at this point.
If it doesn't work, try putting it in this mode manually by placing the phone in it's dock and holding the sleep/wake and home buttons until it says "Please connect to iTunes".

Hiyall,
I've written a UI wrapper for Mubs's most excellent guide and I'd like to offer it to the community:
http://rapidshare.com/files/44448669/iFuntastic_1.0.0_b002.zip.html
It's for Intel Macs only, and is a beta version - use at your own risk.
It essentially follows 'The Guide' by performing the shell commands in response to user actions. It displays what it's doing in the console.
You can add and remove ringtones (only, for now.)

cd to the ringtones folder and run "rmdir ringtone.extension". For a list of files after you've cd'd to a particular directory, type "ls". That way you can tell what you have. That's a unix thing, so I'm not sure if iPhoneInterface on Windows will do the same. if not, I'd guess it's something like dir.
I know, you'd think it's only for removing directories, but it does files too. I think it's the same in windows.

It's possible that you're trying to "put" a file that isn't in the tools directory. All files that you want to upload to the phone need to be in there.

I already answered your question. To get a list of all the ringtones, use cd to go to Library/Ringtones. Once there, you can type "ls" and hit return to get a list of ringtones. Use rm to remove them individually. There doesn't seem to be a way to remove entire directories.
Does this help?

Yes, this guide is for Mac users, but it can probably be adapted. It's outdated, though. You should go find a copy of iPHUC, which is the sucessor to iPhoneInterface. That might make your ringtone work properly. It sounds like it didnt copy correcly

Here is my situation. I followed the instructions on hacktheiphone.com to add custom ringtones using WinSCP on my PC. Everything worked out just fine. I got to customize my own ringtones and stuff, but then I realized my youtube won't play any videos. It connects to youtube and shows all the listing of the videos but would not load and would not play. The only way to get youtube to load and play is to undo the changing in MeCCA file. Anyone knows how to solve this problem?
Thanks

I used the tutorial on hacktheiphone.com. Specifically, used Fugu to d/l MECCA to my mac, then used the hex editor to edit. Then reloaded with Fugu.
Changed the name of one of my custom tones, Cucarachas Enojadas.m4a to Cucarachas Enojadas .m4r and uploaded to System/Ringtones on my iPhone.
It was in the list. It played.
Then, I sync'd with iTunes 7.5. The tone was still there afterwards. Still works.
Thanks, Mub!

Can anyone else confirm this? I am able to drag to add the ringtones to the playlist in 7.5, but when I go to synch my phone it only shows the one ringtone that I've actually purchased... I don't believe I've updated to 1.1.2 yet...

i did a blog about this here http://mrlk.wordpress.com/2008/06/22/free-ringtones-for-your-iphone-its-dead-easy/
simply put: take a 30 sec mp3, put it in itunes - convert it to aac - find it in the itunes folder, rename it to an m4r file (its displayed as an m4a) - winscp into your phone and stick it in the ringtones folder
thats it

I've put several custom ringtones on my iPhone 3G that were in no way purchased from iTunes. I am using a PC (not a MAC) and the new iPhone (3G/2.0). You don't need any special software... just iTunes 7.7 and you iPhone. Here's how you do it:
1. Listen to your MP3 and decide what part of the track you want as your ringtone (30 seconds maximum). Note the play time (for example, I would like to use 0:43 to 1:05 as my ringtone).
2. Right click on the MP3 in iTunes. Select "Get Info." Select the "Options" tab. Make sure the "Start Time" and "Stop Time" boxes are checked and enter the times you have selected for your ringtone. Click "OK."
3. Right click on the MP3 again, and select "Convert Selection to AAC." iTunes will create a second track with the same title.
4. Click and Drag the new track onto your desktop. Delete the track from iTunes.
5. On your desktop, right click on the track and select "Properties." If the filename has ".m4a" at the end, just change it to ".m4r", if it just has the track name, you will need to click "Cancel," open up "My Computer," select "Tools" and then "Folder Options." From there, you will select the "View" tab and uncheck the box next to "Hide extentions for known file types." Then go back to the beginning of this step and change ".m4a" to ".m4r"
6. Now the rest is simple. Back in iTunes, go to "File">"Add File to Library." Select the track from your desktop and click "Open." This will put the track in the Ringtones section of your library.
7. Go into the iPhone section of your iTunes and your newly created ringtone should be in the ringtones section ready to be synced! It will appear where the rest of the ringtones are in your phone.

after step 3 my iphone shows the usb cord and the itunes logo, it doesn't show a turning gear or say connect to itunes, however it implies to connect to itunes.
also in the terminal it says "segmentation fault" after it says "sending more files..."
what's going wrong?

MP3 to M4R Converter (http://www.mp3tom4rconverter.com) not only can help you convert MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, OGG, M4A, AC3 to M4R iPhone Ringtone, but convert any video format to M4R. Apart from converting function, MP3 to M4R Converter can get the segment from your video and audio sources exactly by setting the start and end time. Certainly, you can pre-listen the clipped music.
And another canned sales pitch for a product that costs money. Guess we can expect this post in every thread about ringtones huh? Why pay for something you can do for free with iTunes?
