View Full Version : Bricked?

I assume a bricked phone is one that is unusable. And that's mine.
First, I've had my phone since Aug. 07. And I've been jailbreaking it from day one. I don't know if that provides information about my phone itself.
Anyhow, I used what are referred to as Nate's instructions. Afterwards everything worked well. However, then I used the app "Fixed Disk Space" (something like that). Furthermore, I also did a "passwd" command through Terminal to change the root password (apparently BSD Subsystem now tells you not to do that). After one or both of those changes, I noticed first Maps wouldn't work. Then it turned out a lot of apps didn't work. Ultimately, I couldn't even dial a number.
Not knowing what to do, I decided to follow the instructions for if you accidentally upgraded to 1.1.3. I took my phone down to 1.1.1 and it worked fine. But then when I tried to go through the upgrade process I would only get the screen without any bar. That is I couldn't do anything.
Then I ended up having to downgrade to 1.0.2. It worked fine. But again as soon as I tried upgrading it would get in the state where I couldn't do anything with it. Now, the only to which I can restore where there is a bar is 1.1.3. I have tried combinations of Independence, AppTapp, Jailbreak, etc. on the phone for each firmware but to no avail.
Can anyone provide me with any hints on how to get my phone back up and operating at any firmware?

The problem is that I can't restore to any firmware that will give me the option to register through iTunes, except if I restore to 1.1.3.

go here (http://www.hackthatphone.com/112/iphone_restore_mac.html) (scroll down and you'll see the links) and download the firmwares, place them on your desktop, launch iTunes, once the options to update and restore appear, hold down the option key and click on whichever option you want, select whatever firmware you want to restore/update to.
Hope this helps.

Yeh, I have tried all the firmwares except 1.0
I just don't see the point in going all the way to 1.0 if none of the others work. Let me know if anyone thinks otherwise.
Also I should not that although I get to the screen shots at the very end of the page that sleepy_ghost sent, iNdepence fails to get them out of that mode. Although maybe I'm trying the wrong version of iNdependence?
Here's some more information:
So, I did try 1.0. As with 1.0 and all other downgrades except 1.1.2 and 1.1.3, it will immediately error out when trying to restore to an older firmware with an error something like, "iPhone could not be restored (error 1)."
Again, if I restore to 1.1.3 I will get the bar at the bottom of the iPhone for opening it to the keypad and the option through iTunes to register the iPhone.
When I downgrade to 1.1.2 from 1.1.3 it seems to go fine, but the iPhone end up with the screen with the iPhone usb cord and the iTunes symbol but no bar to open it. And iTunes says that it couldn't be restored. iNdependence says the iPhone is in a state to be restored and has no options.

By some miracle I got 1.1.2 installed with the bar across the bottom of the screen that allows me to get to the keypad. It tells me however (and this is completely new) that the SIM card is Incorrect. That I need to insert an unlocked and valid SIM to activate iPhone.

Go to the address below and follow the steps. I'm assuming you have an ATT sim. The incorrect sim error is mentioned in step 6. I have used these steps twice ending with jailbroken 1.1.3 and everything working.

Well, late last night and prior to getting djay's message, I actually downgraded my iPhone to 1.0.2 and I got the bar for getting to the keypad. The reason I downgraded to 1.0.2 was because iNdependence always complained that I had to be on that firmware. However, the big problem now seems to be the fact that the iPhone and iTunes complain that my SIM is incorrect. And all utilities so far are erroring out with "Segmentation Fault". Specifically I was trying the instructions at:
http://www.hackthatphone.com/73/iphone_first_ten_steps_to_modding_mac.html
BTW, i have a Cingular SIM.
djay's instructions seem to be primarily for Windows. I have a virtual Windows through Parallels, so I don't know if that will work. Also his instructions seem to demand an ATT Sim. Am I screwed?
Anyhow, I'll keep persevering. Any additional suggestions are welcome!

As an update in trying to move back to 1.1.1, the thing seems to be bricked again. That is only allows me to get to the keyboard in 1.1.3.

Hey guys,
I just have a little problem during the jailbraking process using the one touch 1.1.2 jailbrake. It seems that it cannot connect to my phone and spits out a message that it cant connect and tells me to make sure my iphone is plugged in or something to that effect. Can anyone tell me why this is happening? Everything was going fine up to this stage. BTW i do have a AT&T activated simcard and i also activated thru itunes, and also now running 1.1.3 with no problems!!! Any help??? Thanks guys

So as an update. My iPhone is still bricked.
Any other suggestions?

Here's the plan. What do people know about this possibility?
I take my bricked phone to ATT and say I want to put it on the plan. Get the phone running under 1.1.3. Hack it to make sure it's working with my previous Cingular SIM, wait about a week and then go to ATT and say I didn't like it and want to go back to using my old phone (which is what I'm using now). Of course, I would just keep using my iPhone.

But at what firmware do I keep hacking it with the number code? 1.1.1? 1.1.2? That is, at which did you finally get it to take?
