Help with Iphone hack ?

Hey everyone just got a brand new iphone the other day. it is 1.1.2. im brand new to this stuff but have been reading around a bit. i want to hack my iphone so that i can put custom ringtones on there, and some various apps. So i have a few questions:
1.apparently what i need to do is downgrade to 1.1.1 ?
2. my provider is ATT and i am on the iphone plan, and i already activated my phone, will this be a problem ?
3.also is there danger of turning my phone into an expensive paperweight ?
4. is there any way to customize the background or icons (not important just wondering)
5. what are some of the best apps out there to use once i hack my iphone ?
6. once i hack the iphone, will i still be able to use all the apps that come with the program, ie itunes safari what not
any help would be appreciated and sorry for all the newb questions.

- NO, u can always restore your it in iTunes

- Yes, I use customize
5. what are some of the best apps out there to use once i hack my iphone ?
- There are lots, I use vNotes, Skype, sendFile, sendSong, smsd(its a must) You find them all in Installer
6. once i hack the iphone, will i still be able to use all the apps that come with the program, ie itunes safari what not - yes

No need to hack to put custom ringtones on your phone,

What you need:
The song you want
Garageband
makeiphoneringtone v 1.3.1 download for free from http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/

Here is what you do:
1. Use garageband to cut out the 40 sek (NO LONGER) clip you want
2. Send it to itunes
3. find it in user/music/iTunes
4. drag it to makeiPhoneringtone

It will now appear with your ringtones in iTunes - check off sync ringtones in iTunes and you are all set.
You can now delete the 40 sek song that are still in your music library

Apple just released an update to Garageband (4.1.1) that lets you send ringtones direct to itunes from garageband - No need for any other program!

ok how bout if i dont have a mac. is there any similar program that works with a pc. i have windows xp.
