Maybe this is old news, but I just figured all this out and I'm loving it.
If you have your own domain, you're going to love this.
If you have a gmail account, you should already be using the IMAP function to sync up with your iPhone.
I had my domain and email hosted through godaddy. "me@mydomain.com" only had a 25MB inbox. BULLSHIT! Google Apps allows you to point your MX records to their servers letting you use Gmail (5.6 GB of space and counting) for your email and KEEP YOUR CURRENT EMAIL ADDY!
I set up my iphone and mac mail to sync through IMAP, so now anytime I check a message on any platform (iphone, web, powerbook) the email account updates itself and stays perfectly synced.
It's all free too!
If you have a gmail account, or your own domain and are unhappy with your service or dont have IMAP, you should jump on this.
