When I talk to people about getting an iPhone, the number one reason for waiting is usually due to having a contract with another carrier. Sure, the iPhone is shiny, but who really wants to pay $175 to get out of a contract? Reader David sent in a tip to aide individuals facing this dilemma. If you're locked into a contract you can easily get rid of it by using a cellular plan trading site.<!--break-->

The idea behind these sites is that you list your current contract and offer it to others for free. The party on the receiving end gets a short-term contract with no activation fees. You can also toss in your phone and even a cash incentive to get the process rolling.

I personally have not used any of these services, but I've heard good things. David recommends <a href="http://www.celltradeusa.com/" target="_blank">Celltrade</a>, but other companies such as <a href="http://www.cellswapper.com" target="_blank">Cellswapper</a> work in the same way.

To get a better idea of these services' inner workings, check out Cellswapper's highly entertaining and informative <a href="" target="_blank">"Life, love and early termination fees" video</a>.

Thanks David!</div>

I still have a Sprint contract, but I pay $0/month. I explained to the rep that I sold my Treo and was expecting someone to take over my contract, but that didn't happen. He gladly and quick put my account at $0/month. I was shocked, but impressed that someone would let me do that until my contract ran out. So as it stands, I actually have an $8 credit on my account until it expires next June. Sweet.

This doesn't work...according to Verizon's Customer Agreement Contract:

"If you get disconnected by our network from a voice call in your Home Rate and Coverage Area, redial. If the same number answers within 5 minutes, call us within 90 days and we'll give you a 1-minute airtime credit. If service is interrupted in your Home Rate and Coverage Area for more than 24 hours in a row due to our fault, call us within 180 days and we'll give you a credit for the period of interruption. These are your only rights for dropped calls or interrupted service."

They don't allow you early termination of the grounds of dropped calls.

Sprint customers have a limited-time opportunity to escape an ETF if they want to switch to an iPhone: http://consumerist.com/consumer/cell-phones/sprint-mails-customers-a-get-out-of-sprint-free-card-332782.php

The Mobile Direct is a premiere online wireless phone activation company that was so impressed by Celltradeusa we added their link to our site. So far the feedback has been great! Great thing for us is we can offer our customers a way to get out of their unwanted carriers contract and then we can provide them HUGE discounts on signing with the carrier they want. Check out www.TheMobileDirect.com

I am not 100% sure but you still should be able to do a "change of responsibility" with your carrier. The only issue is you will have to find someone to take over your contract your self. When you do, simply call your carrier and have them send you the correct forms.

I hope this helps...
