Today, Samsung announced that it will begin mass producing 16Gb NAND flash memory.
Samsung, as you may know, is Apple's key producer for flash memory chips used in products such as the iPod Nano and the soon to be iPhone. Currently, the chips used in these products have not exceeded 4GB (two in each device), but this new development points to bigger and faster flash memory all around.
16Gb, or gigabits, is equal to approximately 8 gigabytes, and is twice the amount currently used in Apple's flash-based products. This new development could mean that we may see iPhones with 16GB of memory after all. Of course, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. I urge you all to do the same.
In other news, there have been rumors circulating that the iPhone's battery life is surprisingly terrible. As in 40 minutes of browse time terrible. <a href="http://macscoop.com/articles/2007/04/19/iphones-true-battery-life-surprise-us-source" target="_blank">MacScoop claims</a> to have a source saying it's all a bunch of hooey. According to the source, battery life is equal to, if not better than officially stated by Apple:
<em>- Up to 5 hours Talk / Video / Browsing
- Up to 16 hours Audio playback</em>
The only issue, says the source, is that the iPhone is extremely slippery. So slippery that it may need a rubberized case to keep the device from simply slipping out of your hand.
Not so, says Gizmodo, which has stepped up to the plate to smash this rumor into a thousand tiny bits. <a href="http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/iphone-non_news/rumor-smashed-iphone-not-slippery-256177.php" target="_blank">Gizmodo's article</a> states:
<blockquote>"I have held it. It is not a greased pig; it is not a Hawaiian Tropic Model dripping with suntan lotion; it is not a crankcase bearing dipped in 10w40 synthetic Mobile One oil. It is not anymore slippery than an iPod. End of story."</blockquote>
That was seriously going to keep me up all night worried. Either that, or have dreams of an iPhone that continuously slips out of my hand. Thank you Gizmodo for giving me another night of great rest.
