Hi, im new on this forums, and tomorrow im getting my iphone!!!!:D :D :D

Some friends of mine who own a iphone have told me that they have received bills over 2000 pesos(that is about 185 dollars) because of their the use of internet. The carrier they use is telcel and they charge about .01 cent per kb (yes, about ten dollars a MB, you can blame carlos slim) so I wondered, is it possible to prevent the iphone from connecting EDGE? I have heard about several methods like putting it in plane mode and taking out the sim card but those are not practical at all.

Hey in the Settings>General>Network>Edge section, just take off the last bit of the APN.

my APN for edge is: internet.tigo.hn, so when I want to shut it off I just remove the .hn, then it will not have the right address to connect to edge and it will come up with a "cannot activate edge" error when I try to surf when not around Wifi. then I put it back on (.hn) when I need to use it. That way your phone doesn't constantly use it when you aren't paying attention.

There's an app you can install to make the process simpler, but it doesn't seem to work for me. but it may work for you, you can get it with ibrickr. Can't remember what it's called.

Airplane mode turns your cell, wifi, and edge portion of your phone off... don't do that. Kinda defeats the purpose of getting an iphone instead of touch. I've been doing the above for a month, it's seriously the easiest way.

You'll have to enter your local edge settings to get edge internet, when you do, removing a piece of the name so that it errors out is the easiest way I know of.

Cheers.

but will it be bothering me each time it tries to connect and fails?

about the app you were talking, it think it is called services, i read it can disable wifi, bluetooth and edge but I do not know if I have to disable edge each time i restart it.

Another question, does the iphone become unstable to often? If it does, do I have to restart it each time?

thanks a lot for your time =)

>> No, only if you try to access the internet, safari, maps, weather, or email etc.

>> You very rarely have to restart the iphone, and so if you had too, who cares.

Another question, does the iphone become unstable to often? If it does, do I have to restart it each time?

>> if you mod the hell out of it, it can possibly become more and more unstable, I have about 8 apps/mods in mine, and it's not quite as stable as it was before them, but it's within reason. Maybe once or twice a week I have to restart the phone because of a lock up or freeze, not bad all things considered.

thanks a lot for your time =)

Go to Hack the iphone and follow the Step 2 guide (you will find it under the Start Here tab), this will allow you to turn off/on Edge everytime you want.

Good luck

Services works for some, however I've tried using it down here (Roatan, Honduras), it won't remember the EDGE settings. If you have an older phone or if you don't have installer on the phone you can do it with ibrickr.
