The iPhone Elite Dev Team has released their latest creation, <a href="http://code.google.com/p/iphone-elite/wiki/RevirginizingTool" target=;_blank">the iPhone RevirginizingTool</a>. The tool will put an unlocked iPhone back into a virgin state. Once "virginized", a once unlocked iPhone can be safely upgraded to the latest software update without becoming a brick. If you so desire, an unlock can be performed after the update.<!--break-->
The tool requires use of the Terminal therefore isn't for non-geeks. Supposedly bricked iPhones which were unlocked and then upgraded can be repaired using this process as well.
As with all low-level iPhone hacks, it is potentially harmful to your iPhone. If you're not adventurous, we suggest waiting a day or two to see how things go.
