During the Q4 financial results call, Apple announced that an impressive 1.3 million iPhones were sold since its release in June. These impressive sales numbers accounted for $118 million in earnings from iPhones, accessories, and payments from AT&T. Interestingly, Tim Cook announced during the call that Apple estimates 250,000 iPhones were purchased with the intent to unlock. To put it into perspective, this means that a whopping 18% of all iPhones sold were potentially purchased for use on a network other than AT&T.

Of note, downloads of anySIM unlocking software were estimated to be 500,000, indicating that users on the AT&T network have likely used the software as well. Taking iPhoneSimFree into account, it's very likely that AT&T iPhone customers enjoy the flexibility of having more than just one carrier available to them.

I purchased my iPhone in Seattle recently and was asked by the Apple store rep if I was buying it to use unlocked on Rogers network in Canada. They didn't care that I was unlocking it just that I was warned it was certified to run on AT&T network, not tested to run on Rogers network. Another guy in the line was also Canadian and was buying 10 iPhones for friends/family to use unlocked on Rogers network. For those wanting to buy an iPhone I'd strongly suggest not going to the AT&T stores since you're most likely going to run into issues with the dealer unwilling to sell you the hardware with out signing up on a Apple Voice/Data plan.
