Engadget spotted an interesting statement in Walt Mossberg's recent Palm Pre review that is pretty surprising. In all honesty, if there's a non-Apple civilian out there who already has an iPhone that we don't know about, it's probably Mossberg. He has before, and he usually very good at keeping it a secret. However, one statement from his <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090603/palms-new-pre-takes-on-iphone/" target="_blank">Palm Pre review</a> yesterday may have blown his cover.<!--break-->

<blockquote>"Whether the Pre is better than the iPhone depends on your personal preferences, though I'd note that the new iPhone to be unveiled next week will have lots of added features that could alter those calculations."</blockquote>

It sounds pretty conclusive, right? However, he has said similarly conclusive-sounding statements about unannounced Apple products or plans in the past and then explained it away as pure speculation. It wouldn't surprise us if this statement was also intended to be speculative, and we're certain he would insist it was if we asked (assuming he'd take our calls).

He also bounces between blatant information leaking and speculation in statements later on in the review, saying that a new iPhone will be "likely available within a month." He also says it will "likely" lack a physical keyboard, which contradicts a less common rumor that has popped up on occasion.

Oh come ON! Really? Is this what passes now for iPhone "news" or even rumor?

There is nothing in that statement that we didn't already know, or at least assume!

Nobody is doubting that Apple will "reveal" the new iPhone next week. And of COURSE there are going to be new features. Apple has already said that when they did a 3.0 press conference!

Nothing in that statement even implies Walt has an iPhone 3.0.

Stop fantasizing and making stuff up, iPhone boiz!
