Sign-up for the unlimited data plan, $19.99 a month. Then, in the EDGE settings, setup the APN server as "internet2.voicestream.com" (*not* wap.voicestream.com, which is slower and for Blackberry's, although it will work it's not what you want) with a blank username and a blank password. That's it.

Here's a link to a wiki on the various T-Mobile http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/T-Mobile_APNs

I got the 5.99 plan working on my unlocked iPhone. It does take some mods... and an additional file. I will look for the stuff and post it here for oyu.

On T-Mobile, these settings are typically for Blackberry's, although they will work for the iPhone. For faster access though, and in conjunction with the unlimited T-Mobile data plan, you'll want the following T-Mobile settings:

APN: internet2.voicestream.com
Username: (leave empty)
Password: (leave empty)

Hope this helps!

i also found out though on some carries like rogers for example, if you want email to work you need to subscribe to a data plan

Here is the skinny, the procedure that I followed can be found here (http://modmyiphone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5659).

I just downgraded my T-Mobile "Blackberry Unlimited" ($19.99) to "T-Mobile T-Zones" ($5.99). At the time of this screen shot, still without the hack. I was waiting for Edge to stop working to perform the hack under the new data package.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1196/1491294911_16ef265267.jpg

1. After waiting for about an hour, I was forced to perform the hack due to EDGE not working under the old config. The assumption was that at that time the package got downgraded.
2. Followed "Whiz" instructions on the tutorial to the "T". Used "preference.plist" provided for download on the thread (do not used that one); link to the correct one on line 4..
3. Initially after rebooting the phone EDGE didn't want to work. After a little while EDGE started working; however lost WiFi capability altogether. Don't panic!
4. After browsing Hackint0sh's forum, found a different "preference.plist" here (http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=6365&page=4) post #40. This is the right one. Since I didn't have WiFi, was forced to upload via iBrickr.
5. Rebooted phone. WiFi capability restored. Proceeded to test all apps.
6. Everything works except "YouTube" ("Cannot connect to YouTube") and "Colloquy" (maybe because the proxy is not forwarding port 6667). Most people have "YouTube" working, perhaps it doesn't work for me because I performed a hardware unlock. For the record, it doesn't work over WiFi either.

So far so good. Can't beat $5.99. Savings of $14.00

Speedtest screenshot of phone on T-Mobile T-Zones over EDGE:

1. As you can see, the speed is about the same.

Hi iPhoneWriter

I read your post about using
internet2.voicestream.com over wap.voicestream.com
for T-Moble in a iphone.

I have a T-Moble sim card from my blackberry with the unlimited data plan, $19.99 a month. It's in my unlocked iphone now. I tried your internet2.voicestream.com, but it didn't work. Only wap.voicestream.com will work (Thank You for that). You said internet2.voicestream.com is faster. How can I get it to work? In my blackberry I had a username and password. Thank You or anybody for any help.

Were you trying to use a username/password combo with the internet2 settings? If so, that may be why as they are not required. That said, if you weren't trying the internet2 settings with a username/password (meaning they were blank as they should be) then I am not sure what the issue might be.

Since I use t-mobile for the entire family, the unlimited data plan is the best option for us (my kid... txt messaging... enough said) as opposed to the hack the allows using T-Zones.

Hope this helps.

Interesting.. internet3 won't work for me at all, where internet2 does. Makes me wonder if T-Mobile assigns each account to a preferred server... hmmm.

i know that t-mobile has two unlimited internet access plans: one being the blackberry internet add-on and i dont think you can use the internet2.voicestream.com, only wap.voicestream.com. The second one being the unlimited add-on and that if you have that one the internet2.voicestream.com should work better. they both work on the Iphone, i have tried them both it is pretty much which plan you have on your phone....... if that helps

It's on your iPhone. From your main page, elect Settings -> General -> Network -> EDGE... then, enter "internet2.voicestream.com" (without the quotes) into APN section. Leave the Username and Password blank.

Hope this helps.

FYI:

public DNS servers all point to the same ip for wap.voicestream.com, internet2, and internet3, they are the same server. Ip is 208.67.219.132.

I think the speed difference has to be coincidental or placebo effect...

Welp its more of a making sure thing. Before i get going thank you guys for all the info and this site it owns and has helped alot. My question is, I have a iphone 1.1.4. Will it work with the sidekick data plan or do i need to keep my old blackberry data plan. Cause being honest the blackberry data plan set up is hurting my pockets. 20 for everything , instead of 20 for data, another 15 for text and 5 for mms is killer. Thanks in advance for any info. You guys rock

I curently have tmobile and i've tried wap.voicestream, internet2, internet3 and epc.tmobile.com

I use the APN ecp.tmobile.com and it works.
the thing is, tmobile isnt as simple as just pick a data plan and go.
you need to know which devices run which apn.
on my tmobile plan i put it on sidekick lx "where it asks what phone you have" in the little box in the top right corner of your tmobile page and picked the full data plan that runs with the epc.tmobile.com

and believe that samsung behold and memoir use internet2.voicestream.com

im sure someone has figured it out already.
ust adding my 2 cents

Wow people to me this is really crazy and I would like someone to help me out before my unlocked iphone comes next week.

I thought that when you buy an unlocked iphone and the adverstisement says that the phone is unlocked and all you have to do is pop in your Tmobile sim card and you're ready to go, I REALLY THOUGHT THAT WAS ALL THERE WAS TO IT. But after seeing this forum am I wrong? I've never bought an unlocked iphone before and I'm not saavy on sim cards so please excuse my inexperience. All I know is that I already have a contract with Sprint air card and I did not want another contract with AT&T so that's why I decided to get an unlocked iphone.

I haven't received my unlocked iphone as yet. I just ordered an unlocked iphone 3GS from ebay 2 days ago so I should receive it sometime next week. But before I receive it, I better ask these questions now before my iphone comes. I have 5 questions below I know it may seem alot but as a newbie I need to knwo the answers to these questions before my phone comes. Please bear with me and answer them thank you.

1.) Can someone please tell me what would be the first thing I have to do with my iphone when it comes besides charging it?

2.) Where do I insert the Tmobile sim card on the iphone?

3.) After inserting the Tmobile sim card, can I start making calls or do I have to make some programming adjustments?

4.) I saw actual pictures of my iphone, besides the regular icons you see on the front you know youtube, safari, ipod, etc... on the next page I saw 4 more icons called Contacts, Cydia, Blackrain, and Rock. So please let me know if I have to do something with one of these 4 icons once I insert my Tmobile sim card

5.) Where do you guys buy the Tmobile unlimited data and phone sim card from?

6.) Finally do I have to buy myself a sim card tray slot holder or not necessary? Ok I hope you guys can bear with me and answer all my questions because I am a newbie to this thanks

1.) Can someone please tell me what would be the first thing I have to do with my iphone when it comes besides charging it?

You need to transfer over your contacts. If you have them on the SIM card, then in Settings/Contacts you will find a button that says "import contacts from SIM". Once you have the card in, you should be able to make calls with no problem.

2.) Where do I insert the Tmobile sim card on the iphone?

It goes in the top. There is a little hole on the top of the phone. Poke a paperclip or something straight down into the hole and the SIM tray will pop up. Stick the SIM in it, and push it back down. In a little bit the top left of the screen will say "TMobile" or it may just have the bars, either way, you have service.

3.) After inserting the Tmobile sim card, can I start making calls or do I have to make some programming adjustments?

If the phone is unlocked as it should be, you can just start calling.

If the seller unlocked it correctly, you dont need to do anything with those. They are remnants of the jailbreaking process. Cydia is an installer similar to the App Store, as is Rock. Contacts is a default app, and Blackrain is what the software the seller used to unlock the phone. You can ignore it.

5.) Where do you guys buy the Tmobile unlimited data and phone sim card from?

You are going to have to get a SIM from T Mobile somehow. This means you will probably have to go into a store and set up a new plan. They have some new plans that are actually quite affordable and require no contract. You can check them out here: http://tiny.cc/BgOjV
You are going to want a plan will voice and texts, but Im not sure about the data. Obviously you want some type of data service, but the data included in the unlimited plans is tmobile 3G data, which the iphone does not support. I dont know if it that data would just be the slower edge speed or just not work at all. I use the T Zones $5.99 plan, but I don't believe it is an option anymore. T-Zones has been replaced with "Web2go", which has different pricing and plans. You may have to speak with someone at a store about how to get it. http://tiny.cc/ZJKm7
Basically, they are going to tell you that you need a blackberry or smartphone plan in order to get internet, which simply isn't true. Even the cheapest plans can give you access to everything. Find out how much the web2go plans are. Really you should not have to pay $30 a month for slow, edge internet access.

6.) Finally do I have to buy myself a sim card tray slot holder or not necessary?

Again, the SIM tray is in the phone, and will pop out when you push the paperclip in.

Good luck with the new phone. Getting set up shouldn't be too bad. Just make sure that as you read through the forums you check the date of the postings. Old posts may not be relevant anymore. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up.

Thank you so much for answering all my questions. I really appreciate it but I am in shock at your answer below in red. Please answer my last 4 questions below thanks

1. Are you serious? That is the main reason why I'm buying the iphone 3gs not for the talk or the text but mainly for the internet. So are you telling me that if I get a pre-paid Tmobile sim card for $5.99 Tzones are you telling me it won't work for the data?

2. What about the $59.99 a month plan which includes talk, text and Data? If I pay for this without a contract every month, Are you telling me that the data on this plan won't work OR WORSE will be very slow or something?

3. In the ebay ad it says that I can insert any sim card, so do I have to insert a sim card from Tmobile ONLY OR can I insert an AT&T prepaid sim card that will work well with my Data in my iphone 3gs?

4. Finally how do I download apps onto my iphone 3gs without locking it? Do I download them through cydia or what or how do I do it?

I use TZones for data, but you have to remember that Tzones is and EDGE data plan, not a 3G data plan. Meaning it is a lot slower than 3G. When I say the iPhone doesn't support T-Mobile 3G, that is true. Tmobile and ATT have different 3G bands, so an iPhone on T-Mobile will not get 3G, because it is made to receive 3G of a different band (frequency).

2. What about the $59.99 a month plan which includes talk, text and Data? If I pay for this without a contract every month, Are you telling me that the data on this plan won't work OR WORSE will be very slow or something?

It will be slow. You will be paying for a 3G data plan, but only really only receiving an EDGE plan. Basically just wasting money.

3. In the ebay ad it says that I can insert any sim card, so do I have to insert a sim card from Tmobile ONLY OR can I insert an AT&T prepaid sim card that will work well with my Data in my iphone 3gs?

You can use a T-Mobile SIM, ATT SIM or any other SIM card. The phone is a GSM phone, and all GSM networks use SIM cards. So yeah, ATT would work.

4. Finally how do I download apps onto my iphone 3gs without locking it? Do I download them through cydia or what or how do I do it?[/QUOTE]

You can download them from the app store just like everyone else. The phone will not lock back up unless you try to update it or restore it.
