Just got my first iPhone, just found your site - Great! Thanks!

With great anticipation, tried to jailbreak my iPhone, and failed. Got through the steps in http://www.hackthatphone.com/20/quickpwn_2_2_3G_iphone.html until just after the pop-up error message 2001 - and then, I dismiss the error, and get a screen that says at the bottom that "QuickPwn is about to to (sic) run on your iPhone 3G" - with the animated rotating "busy" icon - and it just hangs there forever. QuickPwn is at this point unresponsive to any user input, and the only way out is a forced quit. Afterwards a phone reset is required.

Tried it three times. The first time, I got a quick pop-up message saying something like "failed to enter DFU mode."

iPhone info:

Version 2.2.1 (5H11)
Carrier: AT&T 3.1

Please help! Really looking forward to jailbreaking!

Thanks,

jv

Hi jviss,
sounds like you're on Leopard 10.5.6. Is that correct? In that case you need to revert the IOUSBFamily drivers to 10.5.5, do the jailbreak, then restore the drivers. The iPhone Dev Team has more info on their blog: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ (Look for 'Fixing DFU mode on 10.5.6'.) Good luck! (It's a bit tedious, but it worked for me.)

..., thanks for the reply. I found this thread: http://www.iphonealley.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10000. Sounds like I have the 10.5.6 problem. Would have saved me a lot of time had it been mentioned in hackthatphone's otherwise excellent tutorial.

I bought a powered hub - haven't tried it yet.

Question: do you think this is the result of Apple efforts to prevent jailbreaking?

Thanks,

jv

So, not only have I not successfully "jailbroken" my iPhone, my apps won't run - the meager three applications I installed, two free adn one paid.

The just wouldn't run - click them, blankk screen and then return to the menu without the app running.

So, I deleted them using iTunes, and then tried to synch them, and they won't synch, because iTunes says my iPhone isn't authorized on this computer!

Man, what a bitter taste this leaves in one's mouth!

Does anyone know what may have caused this, and how it may be corrected?

Thanks,

jv

Thanks all, and thanks for this forum.

I bought a powered USB hub, and QuickPwn worked. I really wish I knew why it worked. I prefer this to the software driver revert/restore procedure outlined in the other thread I referenced.

For the apps that wouldn't run, I simply installed them again through the app store; it said in each case that since I had already purchased these before I could install them again for free (even the free ones). So, that works.

Now, off to the races...!

So I got quickpwn to work, it said it was successful, and that it had to reboot which could take some time. My iphone has been rebooting over and over for about an hour and a half. Any ideas of what to do? Thanks

For the record, OS X 10.5.6 came out 3 weeks AFTER I wrote this outdated tutorial you used. You SHOULD be using 2.2.1 firmware and not 2.2. If you had used my 2.2.1 guide you'd see the DFU issue is addressed there, and how to deal with it.

I do not go back in time and update old guides to deal with issues with newer versions of iTunes or OS X. For this reason, it is important that readers always use the most current firmware when using my Step 1 tutorials.

hi all-

tried the quickpwn with 10.5.6, firmware 2.2.1, itunes 8.1.1. process froze up trying after entering DFU mode and "quickppwn is about to run on your ophone 3g". force quit.

before buying a hub, or changing drivers, i'd like to get the everything back to normal.

1) how do i get the phone back? tried holding down the keys as before, but now itunes says 'ipod detected...not identified properly..."

i see this link, is that how? http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....6_Restore.ipsw

could try this too, but not sure how the present condition of the iphone figures into the process. http://gizmodo.com/5113425/how-to-re...-mac-os-x-1056

when the 10.5.6 bug crashed my iphone while going into DFU mode, i downloaded the 'gizmo' work-around. shortly, my laptop was frozen. had to take them both the mac store. guy said yea, 'we're getting a lot of these'. seems the idea that you load 10.5.5 is bogus on the laptop; its reconfigured and needs 10.5.6. for the keyboards/trackpads to even work. luckily he did an archive and reinstall, then iphone woke-up after pressing both keys for 10 secs total, then itunes recognized it again.

i gotta say, this kind of thing looks simple with a pretty tutorial, but the near infinite bits of add'l info spread around the forums makes it hit and miss except for the experts and the very lucky.
