Users with iPhones on AT&T's network started getting notifications on Friday that a new carrier settings update is available for download. The update, which is from 2.9 to 3.1, doesn't list exactly which settings are being updated, but may include changes to the default settings for the way it connects to the network, special dialing codes, and the default settings for Stocks, Maps, Weather, and other items. More information about carrier settings updates is available here.

I have updated my 3G iPhone, and all it's jailbroken goodness remained intact.

I think this update simply adds the correct stuff in software for the M-Cell. I don't think it touches the firmware.

It does something to the Carrier Bundles because you will find that any alternative carrier logo file that you have replaced “Default_CARRIER_ATT.PNG” and “FSO_CARRIER_ATT.PNG” with will not display any more. Even though the correct (replaced) graphic appears in the Carrier Bundle directories (/System/Library/Carrier Bundles/ATT_US.bundle & /310150 through /311180), the standard ATT logo is displayed.

Now, if you use MIM to simply change the text string, that still works. Any uploaded alternative graphic won't display.

Interesting that they'd do that. I wonder if they're just adding a file check in there. Another possibility is that they simply moved the image.
