As you might remember, Google removed the iPhone-optomized version of iGoogle last week. At the time of our article, we didn't know much about why it had been removed other than some vague speculation, but now we have a definite answer, as well as a possible workaround for accessing the iPhone-optomized site. <!--break-->

A thread was started in the Google Talk discussion forums, where many iGoogle for iPhone users expressed their displeasure. In the thread, a Google engineer responded with their rationalle for removing the site:
<blockquote>"We've decided to direct iPhone users to the standard mobile iGoogle page. We've found that people hit iGoogle from lots of different phones -- we want to ensure you'll all see the same version."</blockquote>

A Google spokesman made this comment to Ars Technica:
<blockquote>"In an effort to make our iGoogle mobile experience more consistent, we're no longer supporting a special version of iGoogle for the iPhone. Those who currently use iGoogle for the iPhone will be directed to the main mobile version of iGoogle."</blockquote>

For those of you who aren't willing to waste your time with the un-optomized version on the iPhone, Ars reader soulbarn says you can still access the old page by going to <a href=" http://www.google.com/ig/i?source=mofe" target="_blank"> http://www.google.com/ig/i?source=mofe</a>. It has a few little quirks like each load snapping you to the bottom of the page, but other than that it works well enough.

That's disappointing. I really liked the iPhone version. Even on the desktop it's nice :)

That link (http://www.google.com/ig/i?source=mofe) doesn't work. Says 404.

Looks to me like the iphone version still works on the iPhone. I go to google.com/m and it looks like it's the iPhone verison. if I go to google.com/m on another device, it looks like the junk mobile version.

No, that's the Google mobile search page, which, indeed, hasn't changed. The page in question is the iGoogle personalized home page for the iPhone at: http://google.com/ig/i

Google's excuse is that they want a uniformly lame user experience.
