Updating iPhone

Hi, I have a 1st generation iPhone unlocked and want to update it up to 2.2.
Is this possible with the 2.2 firmware???
Once I´ve done this, can I download application from the App Store???

Yes and yes. Restores are better for jailbreakers though.
