I have a 3G phone that was bought legally as a handset only. It was on version 2.1

it was working on Telkomsel in Indonesia but not fully.

I upgraded to 2.2 using the latest Itunes.

Ran the pwnagetools to jailbreak and unlock.

It got to restoring the custom firmware and then hung with an error message 2001 unknown error.

ran quickpwn

Same thing

I have restored oit to factory setting and all I get now is emergency call facilities.

I have been through the pwnagetool/quickpwn system about 12 times and no luck.

Can you help?

My iPhone 3g does exactly the same thing with both QuickPwn and PwnageTool 2.2.
I get half way through the process, and right after I get into DFU mode, I get iTunes error (2001). Then QuickPwn gets stuck on the step "QuickPwn is about to run on your iPhone 3G" and will not move. I also tried PwnageTool and am getting error (2001) when entering DFU and my iTunes cannot even see my iPhone on the left hand side. I tried to do a "soft" recovery or something (unplug iPhone from cable, hold down Home button and plug in the cable at the same time). Then iTunes could see my iPhone 3G, however, when I tried to restore from my custom firmware, I get error (21) in iTunes. What am I doing wrong? Thanks a lot!

Finally fixed my "Error 21" problem... If you are getting "Error 21", then the problem is that you are ending up in Recovery Mode and not in DFU Mode. See here:

http://thebigboss.org/guides/dfu-mode/

Not sure if you can get into DFU Mode directly once your iPhone is in recovery mode, but what did work for me was to do a normal restore (to 3.0), then put the phone in DFU mode, then follow the instructions to downgrade to 2.2. Be sure to confirm you end up in DFU mode this time.

Hope this helps others.
