Shazam Launches New App, Shazam Encore

Shazam Entertainment today announced the availability of a paid version of their wildly successful Shazam application. For those who don't know, Shazam allows you to identify music as its playing using your iPhone or iPod touch's microphone. Shazam Encore [App Store, $4.99] includes several enhancements over the free version such as improved tagging speed, music recommendations, and search. One very cool new feature is the ability to see the top tracks being identified by Shazam.

The company also notes that they will continue to support the original free version of Shazam [App Store], although it will be limited to five tags per month. Current users of the free version will not have a limit.

so could some one explain to me how old shazam users will continue to receive unlimited use while new shazam users will only get 5

I have absolutely no idea! I just reported what the Shazam folks told us.

I just read in iTunes under the "what's new" for 1.8 of Shazzam and it says:


PLEASE NOTE:
As an existing user when you update to Shazzam 1.8 you will keep unlimited tagging.

yea i just checked and i didnt see that at all

I sent an email to the Shazam folks about this. I'll report back once I hear from them.

Current users of the free version will not have a limit!!!!!! HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH ONE IS THE CURRENT USER???? Even if you have no limit but it will be very very very slow!!! I think the only way to get the old version back is to get to HACKULO (Installous app from Cydia)!!!

Ok, I got ahold of Jennifer who's on the Shazam PR team. I asked "So if someone updates, do they keep their unlimited tagging?"

She replied:

Short answer, yes. Long answer: Existing users will get a prompt to upgrade to the free version but will retain unlimited tags. Only new users will be limited to 5. And everyone who purchases Encore, which is the upgrade, gets unlimited tags as well.
So that's what I know. I've updated my own app to version 1.8 and I haven't encountered any limitations. I'm guessing that if you remove the app and install it later, you may be downgraded to the five-per limitation.
