'Searching For Service' Bug Plaguing Many iPhone Users
Many users on Apple's support forums are reporting a bug that prevents any form of cellular connection to their iPhone. Users say that without warning or any apparent cause, their iPhone will enter "searching for service" mode, and never returning from that state, even when they are in areas they know they get good coverage.
Some have suggested that the problem could be on the carrier side, or possibly an issue with the phones caused by a carrier update. Others believe that it has something to do with the device's firmware, but the cause isn't known for certain, though most users say the problems started with iPhone OS 3.1, and remain with 3.1.2. Also, the issue is occurring on devices on different carriers in different countries.
No solution has been found yet.

I was in a room with as friend of mine who also had a iPhone who was getting great service, I took off my protective case, and voila it immediately went to 5 bars. Taught be a valuable lesson about what materials can block a signal.
