Reminder: Activate “Find My iPhone” Feature

Just a few days ago, a close friend had his iPhone 3GS stolen while going through his daily exercise over at Life Time Fitness, for those who know what that is. Unfortunately, he had forgotten to activate the “Find My iPhone” feature just recently made available for being able to track the location of your iDevice.

The Find My iPhone feature is available through the settings application on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and even the iPad. What it allows you to do, once activated, is access a map via a web browser pinpointing the exact location of the device. Though it may not prove to be too useful for the iPod Touch and WiFi models of the iPad, because of its reliance on a WiFi connection, iPhone owners should activate the feature as soon as possible to ensure to safekeeping of their phones.

Steps for activation:
1. Navigate to the Settings application in any of the three mentioned devices above running on at least iOS 4.2.

2. Click on Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Add a new mail account with the option MobileMe given to you in the list of providers prior to you’re prompted to entering your account information.

3. Enter your Apple ID and password where specified or use the option listed below to create a new account. Remember this login as it’s what you need in order to track your device and for any Apple orders you make later.

4. Verify your account by following the steps included in an email sent to your Apple ID account.

5. Finally, activate MobileMe by navigating back to the MobileMe email account selection
(Settings–>Mail, Contacts, Calendars)

6. You’re done!

To locate your device, go to on a computer browser and enter the same Apple ID which you used for setup on your device. If you’ve done all of the steps above correctly, you’re be prompted to a map showing the location of your device. From here you can add a lock key, display a message or even wipe the full contents of your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Even if you don’t have a 3G enabled Apple device, the above steps are completely worth taking as a precaution.

Looking on the bright side of matters for my friend, this gives him a solid reason to go out and get a newer model of the iPhone!
